IVF Fund

With the IVF Fund Act, which came into force on 1 January 2000, an IVF Fund was established at the Federal Ministry for Social Security and Generations. Under certain conditions, it covers 70% of the costs of four IVF or ICSI treatments. The couple concerned only has to pay a co-payment amounting to the remaining 30% for medication and treatment costs. The costs of an IVF treatment are comparable throughout Austria.

Costs of an IVF or ICSI attempt

In accordance with the agreed tariffs, the following table shows the rates including medication costs for treatment within one attempt of IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). For treatment at the Wunschbaby Institut Feichtinger, you therefore only pay the co-payment shown in the last column.

Treatment Age group Costs Your costs
IVF Women under 35 € 3,342.60 € 1,002.78
ICSI Women under 35 € 3,700.83 € 1,110.25
IVF Women aged 35–40 € 3,567.33 € 1,070.20
ICSI Women aged 35–40 € 3,925.50 € 1,177.65

These amounts are stated excluding taxes and may increase in accordance with the applicable tax regulations.

The rates include all consultations required during treatment, ultrasound examinations, laboratory tests, psychological or psychotherapeutic support, medical products and medication, as well as the actual treatment measures and follow-up care until it is determined whether or not a pregnancy has occurred.

Requirements for cost coverage by the IVF Fund

To be eligible for cost coverage by the IVF Fund, the following requirements must be met:

Medically confirmed indication

  • Tubal sterility: fallopian tubes blocked on both sides, removed or non-functional (tubal ligation not included)
  • PMOS (formerly PCOS)
  • Endometriosis

These diagnoses must be documented by a specialist using imaging procedures (ultrasound images/X-ray images) or a surgical report.

  • Reduced fertility of the man (documented by two semen analyses at least one month apart, in total no older than two years)

Other requirements

  • At the start of treatment, the woman must not be older than 40 and the man not older than 50.
  • Austrian citizens or EU citizens (written proof of health insurance) or
  • Persons who are not Austrian citizens, not nationals of an EU or EEA member state, and not citizens of the Swiss Confederation must both hold a permanent residence permit issued by an Austrian authority (“Daueraufenthalt – EG” or “Daueraufenthalt – Familienangehöriger”).
  • Entitlement to cost coverage exists for couples who are married or in a marriage-like partnership (notarial deed required).
  • Entitlement to cost coverage exists for a maximum of four attempts per couple. If one of these attempts is completed successfully and a pregnancy is achieved (positive heartbeat in the 8th week of pregnancy on ultrasound, or ectopic pregnancy), entitlement to cost coverage for four further attempts arises from that attempt onwards. The same applies if a pregnancy was achieved through an attempt not financed by the Fund, provided the couple clearly demonstrates that the pregnancy resulted from an IVF method.
  • Further information and requirements at sozialministerium.at

Each attempt is registered and completed individually by the WIF staff. For each attempt, both the age limits and all other criteria must be verified and met.

FAQ

Costs & the IVF Fund: the most frequent questions.

How much does the IVF Fund cover?

If the legal requirements are met, the IVF Fund covers around 70% of the costs of up to four IVF or ICSI treatments. You pay the co-payment of around 30% for treatment and medication. The rates are regulated uniformly throughout Austria – so with us you do not pay more than anywhere else.

Which requirements do we have to meet for the IVF Fund?

At the start of treatment, the woman must not be older than 40 and the man not older than 50. In addition, a medically confirmed indication, valid health insurance or the required residence status, and a marriage or marriage-like partnership (notarial deed) are needed. You will find all details above on this page and under Requirements.

Which medical indications does the IVF Fund recognise?

Recognised indications include fallopian tubes blocked or non-functional on both sides, PMOS, endometriosis and reduced fertility of the man, documented by two semen analyses. The diagnosis must be documented by a specialist – we support you with all the required evidence.

What do we have to pay privately?

For a Fund-supported treatment, this is essentially the co-payment of around 30% including medication. If the Fund requirements are not met, or if you would like services outside the Fund tariff, you bear the costs privately. What this means in your specific case is something we discuss with you transparently before treatment begins.

What does the first consultation cost?

Getting started is deliberately low-threshold: our fertility info evenings are free of charge and non-binding. For the in-depth one-hour first consultation, we tell you the costs transparently when you book the appointment – so you know exactly what to expect in advance.

Will we be reimbursed for costs?

We handle the processing with the IVF Fund for you: each attempt is registered and completed by our staff. In addition, depending on your personal situation, treatment costs may under certain circumstances be tax-deductible as an extraordinary burden – it is best to clarify this with your tax adviser. Private supplementary insurance may also cover part of the costs, depending on the policy.

Is payment in instalments possible?

Just ask us: whether and in what form payment in instalments or an individual payment model is possible is something we are happy to clarify in a personal conversation. Financial questions should not slow you down on the way to your longed-for baby – simply contact us.

How often does the IVF Fund provide support – including after a birth?

The Fund supports up to four attempts per couple. If one of these attempts leads to a pregnancy, a new entitlement to four supported attempts arises from that point. Under certain conditions, this also applies if the pregnancy resulted from an IVF attempt not financed by the Fund.
