Women in the Czech Republic and Slovakia receive an expense allowance for their egg donation, unlike in Austria, where this is prohibited. In the EU there is no consensus on appropriate compensation for egg donors, but the conviction that eggs should not be traded as a commodity is widespread. Even in countries with high compensation for egg donations, altruism is expected. Spain has become an important destination for couples from countries with a shortage of donor eggs. Thanks to compensation of up to 1000 euros and a special appeal to women's altruism, 54 percent of all egg donation cycles take place in Spain. Donors there are mostly migrant women and women with low incomes.

Neue Methoden: Hoffnung für kinderlose Paare
Couples who have already tried every available therapy in hopes of having a child are usually left with only one thing: hope. Hope for a new technique or a new treatment that could help them have the child they long for. Recently, such a glimmer of hope has been offered at the Wunschbaby Institut in Vienna: with the plasma method, blood is taken from the woman and processed so that purified thrombocyte plasma remains. "Thrombocytes are the blood platelets. They are the first to reach a wound and close it, for example when you cut yourself. When the plasma is injected into the ovaries, this can have a positive effect on ovarian function," says Michael Feichtinger, gynaecologist and deputy head of the institute.
