Ferticheck Male – the semen analysis.

“It always takes two to make a baby,” as the old saying goes. Often the woman takes the first step and, when things haven’t worked out with a baby for some time, books an appointment with her gynaecologist. What usually follows are several ultrasound examinations, blood tests to determine hormone levels and examinations of tubal patency.

Why the man first?

In over half of all couples, a (contributing) cause lies with the man.

In over 50% – that is, in more than half of all couples trying to conceive – we can find a (contributing) cause of infertility in the man. An unhealthy lifestyle, postponed family planning and infections (such as COVID) also affect fertility in men. Read more under male infertility.

Examining male fertility is considerably simpler and more comfortable than examining the woman. It therefore makes sense for the male partner to be examined at the same time as – or even before – his partner.

Semen analysis at the Wunschbaby Institut Feichtinger in Vienna

The male fertility work-up – nothing could be easier!

To assess a man’s fertility, a semen analysis is all that is needed as a first step. It determines the quantity, motility and number of normally shaped sperm cells. Ideally, you should not have ejaculated for 2–5 days before the semen analysis.

A shorter “abstinence period” leads to a decrease in the number of sperm cells, while a longer one leads to an increase in poor-quality sperm. If any abnormalities are found in your semen analysis, we recommend a follow-up check after at least one month. If these abnormalities persist, we can discuss the optimal treatment for you together. A closer examination of the semen for bacteria can often identify an inflammation as the cause of a reduced semen result.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know about the semen analysis.

Which doctor or laboratory is responsible for a semen analysis?

Strictly speaking, no particular doctor is responsible. If you want a semen analysis to assess your current fertility or as a precaution for your future family planning, you have come to the right place. In principle, you can also have a semen analysis carried out by your urologist or in a laboratory – however, by assessing your semen analysis directly, we can determine the optimal treatment together with you right away.

Can a semen analysis be done at home?

You can provide your semen sample at home in a sterile medical container and bring it to the Wunschbaby Institut. The sample should be no more than 45 minutes old when it arrives at the Wunschbaby Institut and should be kept at body temperature during transport.

You will find further tips on providing a semen sample in our expert blog. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with our specialists!
