In the case of IVF, is it possible to control the number of eggs that are being fertilised? For example, to fertilise only 2-3 eggs that will later be implanted, and not to have any residual embryos frozen?

Sabrina on 07.05.2026:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

It is possible to fertilise only a small number of oocytes. The additional oocytes could be cryopreserved without being fertilized. It is not very common, as we don´t know which oocyte will lead into the best blastocyst so a selection is less effective. This is something best to discuss with all the information you bring as a couple (age, reason for infertility ect)

Is it safe to take a short flight on holiday a few days after an insemination, or is it not recommended because of implantation and the strain on the body?

Lisa on 28.04.2026:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

From my point of view, there is nothing to be said against flying off on holiday. The flight itself is also completely safe during pregnancy as far as radiation exposure is concerned. If it is a long-distance trip, any recommendations regarding infectious diseases such as the Zika virus should be taken into account. Have a wonderful trip and hopefully a positive pregnancy test!

During my fertile phase I measured a vaginal pH of 4.5, even though the pH is supposed to become alkaline shortly before ovulation. I also cannot detect any fertile cervical mucus. But I did get the timing right. What does this pH value mean for me? What can I do about it? I have never had infections or any other known problems.

Marina on 26.01.2026:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

You may be measuring the pH vaginally, where a value of 4-4.5 is normal. Only the cervical mucus has a more alkaline pH of 7-8. Since you do not notice any cervical mucus, it could help to confirm ovulation by other means, for example an ovulation test or ultrasound.

I am almost 36 and have been trying to conceive for 4 cycles without success. We already have one child; back then it worked right away (2023). My cycles are regular, and I probably ovulate around cycle day 14. At what point should we take a closer look?

Fabienne on 21.01.2026:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

For women over the age of 35, a fertility work-up is recommended after 6 months, so as not to lose too much time and to be able to respond to any possible problems. Part of this work-up would be a semen analysis for the man as well as an ultrasound examination and a hormone profile for the woman. We would be happy to advise you individually in a personal consultation.

Good day, I am 43 years old and my hormone profile shows that I am already in perimenopause. My partner and I still wish for a second child. However, IVF is out of the question for us. Are we still in the right place at your clinic, or do you specialise only in IVF?

Theodora on 15.01.2026:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Thank you very much for your enquiry! At our clinic we do not only carry out IVF treatments — we would be happy to advise you on alternative treatment options. In a consultation we can then find out which option is best for you.

I have a few questions: 1) We come from Germany — is that possible? 2) What does it cost approximately? Of course it depends on which medications etc. 3) We already have some frozen here in Germany — would that work too?

Sandra on 01.12.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Treatment of couples from abroad is generally possible. The costs are billed privately (assuming that you are not insured in Austria and do not live here). For a frozen embryo transfer, the costs are approximately 1,500 euros. However, as you already mentioned, it depends on whether additional medications or add-ons are planned. Please book an appointment for a free personal information consultation at the Wunschbaby Institut Feichtinger Baden! (every second appointment here takes place online)

We have been trying to conceive for 4 years (me, 32, and my husband, 36). We already had a daughter in 2020, after a miscarriage. Now to my question: is it possible to have IVF or ICSI with a BMI of 35?

Julia on 23.10.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

A BMI of 35 is by no means a reason not to be able to undergo assisted reproduction. Of course, we take your weight into account when planning the medication dosage and provide every patient with individual risk counselling. In principle, however, an IVF treatment can be carried out completely normally. We are happy to support you!

I am 39 and have already had 3 miscarriages. I cannot document 2 of my miscarriages because they were 13 years ago. The 3rd miscarriage was 2 months ago. I would really like to have PGD performed — is this possible?

Erin on 15.09.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

PGD in the sense of polar body diagnosis can certainly be performed in your case. In this procedure, the chromosome set of the egg cell is examined for genetic changes. It would certainly be a good idea to explain this examination and further diagnostic options (immunology, coagulation, uterus, karyograms) to you in a detailed consultation.

We have 5 children, of whom 1 is a girl, and we long very much for another girl. My question is whether there are any tips on how to be more likely to have a girl? We tried intercourse 4 days before ovulation 4 times, and each time it was a boy.

Nadine on 09.09.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

I can understand your wish for another daughter. Unfortunately, there is no method that can give you a reliable chance of a pregnancy with a girl. Genetic testing of embryos to determine the sex is only possible abroad; in Austria this is not permitted by law. Alternative methods, such as the interval between intercourse and ovulation that you mentioned, are only imprecise.

We have been trying to have a child for 1 year. Everything is fine with me. TSH, AMH, FSH and the vitamins as well. I also received a trigger shot to induce ovulation, but unfortunately it did not work. I do not know where the problem lies.

Sarah on 27.06.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

For further clarification, a semen analysis of your partner should be carried out first and foremost. In addition, a test to check the patency of the fallopian tubes can be done. Both can be carried out directly at our Wunschbaby Institut.

How long does it take from the initial consultation to the appointment for assisted reproduction via IVF? Is the waiting time long?

Theresa on 27.06.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Thank you very much for your enquiry. You are welcome to book an appointment for the initial consultation online or by phone. If the indication and the wish for IVF treatment are clear, a stimulation plan will already be drawn up at this appointment, and the further necessary examinations and documents will be explained. As a rule, 4-6 weeks pass between the initial consultation and the egg retrieval — depending on the phase of your cycle at the initial consultation.

Can you tell me how much in vitro fertilisation with donor sperm costs, since my husband underwent the TESE method and no sperm was found?

Simone on 10.06.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Regarding the costs of IVF treatment, it very much depends on whether the IVF Fund covers 70% of the treatment costs or not. However, the medical indication is certainly given due to your husband's diagnosis. In that case, the treatment costs for one IVF cycle amount to approximately 1,600 euros, in addition to approximately 1,000 euros for the sperm, although there are of course price differences here — depending on the quality and quantity of the straws ordered. I hope this rough information helps you for now. In a consultation, I would be happy to explain the procedure and all further information to you.

I have a question for you: My girlfriend has Pap 3D1 with an HPV infection, and I wanted to ask whether it is still advisable for her to have a child?

Harald on 10.06.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

According to the guideline, a colposcopy with sample biopsies would be arranged in this case. If these show only low-grade changes, your partner can become pregnant. However, if higher-grade changes are found, a conisation (surgical removal of the altered area on the cervix) may be indicated. During this phase, I would briefly pause the baby planning.

I am 34, almost 35, and my husband will soon be 36. We became pregnant relatively "quickly" — after 3 cycles of trying — but unfortunately lost the baby in week 7. Now we have been trying to get pregnant again for 3 months... in vain. (with ovulation tests and partly basal temperature measurement). I know it doesn't sound like a long period of time, but I have the feeling that my cycle has been more unstable since the miscarriage, and because of my age I am afraid that something might not be right after all. Can we still come to see you (info evening) and get advice, or arrange an initial consultation later?

Paula on 25.05.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Of course you can make an appointment with us. Especially after a miscarriage, many couples feel unsettled, and it helps to gather information and seek advice in advance — also with a view to a new pregnancy. Feel free to book an info evening appointment on our website or give us a call — we are here for you!

Hello, I had my 1st ICSI egg retrieval in Styria a week ago. 6 follicles were retrieved, only 2 contained egg cells (poor egg quality was noted for one of them), and neither of them could be fertilised. With such a low number and a low AMH, does it even make sense to start another attempt, or should we try egg donation right away in this case? We definitely do not want to go back to the clinic we attended — mainly because of the lack of empathy shortly before the egg retrieval and afterwards :(

Nina on 24.04.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

I am sorry to hear that you have had such an unpleasant previous experience. The step towards egg donation is a big one, so the information is not sufficient for me to make a statement in this regard. Rather, I would like to offer you a consultation to discuss your situation in detail once again and to work out a further treatment plan with you.

I would be interested to know whether, with an AMH value below 1, at the age of only 31 and with Hashimoto's, one could receive support from the IVF Fund.

Barbara on 04.04.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Whether funding through the IVF Fund is possible should be determined in the course of a detailed consultation. Age, AMH value and Hashimoto's thyroiditis alone are not Fund indications. Through examinations such as a semen analysis, a vaginal ultrasound and a hormone profile, it can be clarified whether you are nevertheless entitled to Fund coverage. In most cases, this is the case.

Is it possible to reverse a tubal ligation at your clinic?

Sabine on 20.02.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

We cannot reverse a tubal ligation. However, by means of IVF treatment we can bypass the function of the fallopian tubes by retrieving the egg cells from the ovary after stimulation and then carrying out the fertilisation with your partner's sperm in vitro. In this way, a new pregnancy becomes possible.

We are looking for the option of having sperm frozen, just in case we do want to have another child at a later point in time. My husband is planning a vasectomy.

Tanja on 12.02.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Your idea of having sperm frozen before a vasectomy is very forward-thinking and keeps the option open for you to have another child at a later point in time. We would be happy to advise you on the procedure and the costs.

My girlfriend and I already have a daughter. For about 1 year we have been trying for my girlfriend to become pregnant again. She has already had 1 miscarriage. Since we wish for a second child, I would like to ask you the following questions. Is assisted reproduction possible in the near future despite already having a child? Do we have to complete tests? (semen analysis, etc.) How long does the process take (tests, etc.) — up to the fertilisation?

Markus on 22.01.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

IVF treatment is sometimes necessary — and of course also possible — even in cases where the first child was conceived spontaneously. To better assess where a possible cause may lie, a hormone examination and ultrasound for the woman as well as a semen analysis check for the man can be carried out. Taking all findings together, you would then be informed and advised accordingly. Perhaps a free orientation evening would also be useful for you, where you can receive initial information in a private 15-minute consultation.

Can you tell me whether it is possible to retrieve and freeze egg cells even after a hysterectomy? I am asking because I am a trans man (20 years old, 3 years on testosterone) and am currently looking for ways to preserve the possibility of having genetically my own children without having to go through menstrual cycles.

Flori on 21.01.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Thank you very much for your enquiry. It is possible, even after removal of the uterus — provided the ovaries have been preserved — to stimulate them and retrieve egg cells. A pregnancy would then be possible if a female partner carries the child. Alternatively, surrogacy abroad would be an option, as it is not legally permitted in Austria.

My partner, 31 years old, and I, 36 years old, wish to have a child. However, azoospermia was diagnosed in my case in 2 semen analysis reports, and the clinical genetic examination also came back very negative. The doctor there said that the wish for a child could not be fulfilled. My question is: Can one apply for sperm donation at your clinic? What about the costs?

Marko on 16.01.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Of course, after reviewing your reports, we would advise you on a completely individual basis. If a pregnancy is only possible with donor sperm, we work together with several sperm banks in order to be able to offer you a good selection of donors. We would be happy to explain the exact procedure to you in the course of a detailed initial consultation.

Good day, we have 3 children (1 son, 2 daughters). Our son wishes for a brother, and of course so do we. I read something about sperm selection on your institute's website and understood that it is possible to have a boy with the help of sperm selection. What possibilities does sperm selection offer us?

Tanja on 02.01.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

In Austria, selecting embryos by sex is not permitted by law. Sperm selection does not refer to choosing a particular sex but rather attempts to select sperm that have a higher chance of leading to a pregnancy.

Do you provide deep freezing of sperm bank? And surrogacy

Julian on 01.01.2025:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly. We do have sperm bank in our clinic and also cooperate with international sperm banks. Surrogacy is not allowed in Austria therefore we are not able to offer it.

Good day, I am 58 years old and have not had a period for 4 or 5 years. My AMH value last year was 0.01. Could I still become pregnant again?

Maria on 27.12.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Based on your information, it must be assumed that you are already in menopause and that a pregnancy (with your own egg cells) is therefore ruled out. A pregnancy via egg donation would theoretically be possible, but in Austria it is legally bound to an age limit of 45 years.

Hello, we are a couple (37 & 38) from Germany with a strong desire to have a child. Unfortunately, I have now been diagnosed with uterine cancer and have to have my uterus removed. We are devastated and are now looking for alternatives. Would it be possible, without a uterus, to use my egg cells? Do you also help with questions regarding surrogacy?

Lucia on 23.12.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Thank you very much for your message. If your ovaries have been preserved, it is possible to obtain mature egg cells through hormonal stimulation and to fertilise them in vitro with your husband's sperm. A pregnancy with the embryos obtained in this way would have to be carried by a surrogate mother. Unfortunately, this is not legally permitted in Austria, so we would have to refer you abroad.

Dear Dr. Pichler, does the Institut Feichtinger also offer the option of in-house preparation of donor sperm for IVF or IUI? Only ICI straws are available from the selected donor in the database.

Patricia on 26.07.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Yes — we can prepare ICI sperm at our clinic in such a way that it is suitable for IUI/IVF. Kind regards, Dr. Alena Pichler

I have suffered from severe PCOS for years. Thanks to IVF, my husband and I nevertheless have 2 healthy sons. Now we are thinking about expanding our family with a third child. After two boys, this time we wish for a girl. I read an article on your website saying that it is possible to fertilise the egg cells only with female sperm. Is this possible at your institute?

Christa on 25.07.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

As much as I can understand your wish for a girl, in Austria we are not legally permitted to select embryos by sex. Kind regards, Dr. Alena Pichler

My question is whether one will be with the same doctor throughout the treatment, and how many visits I need on site, and whether with my partner or alone?

Julia on 23.07.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

The treatment of a couple is handled by one doctor, so that a trusting relationship can be established. There are appointments at which both partners should be present, and others for which it is sufficient if the patient comes alone. The number of appointments depends on the planned therapy; for an IVF treatment there are usually 1-3 ultrasound examinations as well as the appointment for the egg retrieval and the embryo transfer itself.

Good evening, I would like to undergo social egg freezing. I have endometriosis and have been taking Metrissa for a year; I decided against surgery, as a pregnancy is not planned at the moment. Is it legally possible, on this basis, to carry out egg freezing at your clinic, or do you cooperate with clinics abroad?

Carina on 15.07.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Due to the endometriosis, the medical indication for egg freezing is given. This can be carried out at our institute. I would be happy to explain the details to you in the course of an initial consultation!

Since I am single, I am undergoing fertility treatment in Cyprus. The 1st transfer was unfortunately unsuccessful. I would now like to take advantage of all the implantation aids and tests that exist — as I currently have only 1 top-quality embryo left frozen. The NK & plasma cell test was unfortunately significantly elevated, so I am currently taking an antibiotic and receiving infusions before the next transfer. Does your clinic offer further support? I have read, for example, about uterine flushing. (HCG, TRES PRP, PBMC..) Thank you very much

Lena on 25.06.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

I would suggest that you come in for a consultation. Without detailed prior information, it is difficult to make good recommendations and to assess which examinations might still be useful in your case. Uterine flushing is only appropriate in certain situations, for example when the uterine lining does not build up well! We would be delighted if you called us to arrange an appointment!

Good day, up to what age can IVF be carried out? I am 33 now.

Anna on 28.05.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

In principle, there is no age limit for IVF treatment, although the chances of pregnancy decline sharply from the age of 40. In addition, coverage of 70% of the treatment costs in Austria is limited by an age cap of 40 years for the woman and 50 years for the man. I hope this information is helpful to you. Otherwise, we would be happy to discuss your situation in the course of an initial consultation.

My husband has only 11 percent slowly progressive sperm and I have endometriosis. Is it still possible for us to have a child?

Manuela on 26.05.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

We regularly see the combination of reduced sperm quality and endometriosis. Fortunately, thanks to reproductive medicine techniques, it is possible to become pregnant even in such a situation. I would be happy to explain to you in a personal consultation which treatment options are available to you.

Is artificial insemination also permitted if you could in principle become pregnant, but are in a same-sex relationship and therefore cannot conceive?

Maria on 13.05.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Treatment for same-sex couples has been possible in Austria since 2015. In an initial consultation, we clarify the most important questions in advance. Whether artificial insemination in the form of IVF is necessary, and whether financial support through the IVF Fund may be claimed, must be clarified beforehand. Alternatively, insemination is an option for same-sex couples.

According to the Ministry of Health brochure, you are only eligible for the IVF Fund if endometriosis has been confirmed surgically. Does this also apply if the endometriosis has already been diagnosed by a specialist using imaging? My partner was diagnosed with endometriosis years ago by the head of the endometriosis centre. I consider a surgical procedure purely for diagnostic purposes, and not for treatment purposes, to be medically unethical. The Reproductive Medicine Act also does not state that surgery is a prerequisite, merely a diagnosis. Do you know what the exact legal situation is here?

Valentina on 30.04.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

Thank you for your interesting question. Proof of endometriosis for the purposes of eligibility under the IVF Fund is indeed generally provided by a surgical report. I would be happy to review your findings in a personal consultation and clarify whether they will be accepted for registration with the Fund.

Good morning, my partner (30) and I (29) have been trying to get pregnant for almost a year! We had a miscarriage in the autumn and now, sadly, another one! We are both in despair because we do not know what could be causing this! Does it make sense to pursue further investigations at this stage?

Karin on 11.04.2024:

Dr. Alena Pichler answered this question.

I am sorry that you have had to cope with two miscarriages. As the psychological burden in this situation is very great for couples, an investigation can be carried out after two, and at the latest after three, miscarriages. The causes can lie with the mother, the father or the fetus itself and can involve genetics, the immune system or blood clotting. Hormonal or organic causes can also be investigated. We would be happy to discuss with you in a personal consultation which examinations would make sense in your case!

Hello, my child is a trans child, 16 years old, and the endocrinology department at AKH Vienna recommended that we seek advice from a fertility clinic regarding future family planning. In our case, it concerns the possible freezing of sperm. Can we turn to you for this?

Sarah on 05.03.2024:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

We are happy to be available for an initial consultation on fertility preservation at one of our centres in Lower Austria (Baden) or Vienna (1130). Please feel free to make an appointment.

In all likelihood, I am currently experiencing my second ectopic pregnancy. The first was surgically removed about 9 months ago while preserving the fallopian tube, and now I would like to be treated with methotrexate. In the future (after the mandatory break), I would like to pursue IVF, but I do not know whether I would be supported by the Fund. Is my history sufficient?

Carla on 04.03.2024:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

In principle, the Fund provides coverage in cases of fallopian tube patency problems. In reproductive medicine, we tend to prefer removal of a fallopian tube rather than preservation in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, since statistically the risk of another ectopic pregnancy is greatly increased.

Dear team, I already had a telephone consultation about social freezing around a year ago. Now I have the following further questions: Can the egg cells be transferred to other countries if I should no longer be living in Vienna at the relevant time? How much does that cost? I received a sheet listing all the test results I should bring to the first appointment. What exactly happens at the first appointment? What are the next steps? Many thanks for the information!

Beate on 23.02.2024:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

A first appointment is an information and planning consultation lasting approximately 50-60 minutes, already quite concrete in terms of procedure and scheduling. Regarding your question about the transport of egg cells: in principle, we are permitted to release egg cells for transport abroad. Depending on whether this takes place within the EU or internationally, the costs vary considerably between 1,000 and 2,000 euros.

Good evening, I have a question for you. I underwent an ICSI treatment and started the treatment with Synarela from 28.12, and I got my period on 04.01 (cycle day 1), and the Pergoveris injection on 13.01 (cycle day 10), and on 25.01 the egg retrieval took place, on 28.01 the embryo transfer. My regular cycle is 26-28 days. My question is why the embryo transfer was on cycle day 25? And how can you get pregnant when cycle day 25 is certainly not the implantation window for me?

Marijana on 20.02.2024:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

According to your description, you had a down-regulation stimulation protocol. You must not calculate here using your "regular" cycle days. You will certainly also be receiving further medication to support the endometrial lining. What matters here is not the "cycle day" as such, but the correct timing after egg retrieval and the condition of the uterine lining.

Good morning, we are a couple from Germany looking for a suitable clinic for egg donation. I am 31 years old and my boyfriend is 33 years old. Before we decide on a clinic, we have listed a few questions below which would help us to possibly decide in favour of your clinic. We would be very grateful if you could give us feedback on these. 1. What is your success rate? And to which stage does your success rate refer? 2. How many donor egg cells do I receive through the IVF treatment? Is that the minimum, the average or the maximum number of guaranteed egg cells? 3. Do you guarantee a minimum number of donated egg cells? What happens if only 3-4 egg cells are retrieved? What is the average number of egg cells one receives? 4. Do you guarantee a minimum number of embryos? If so, does this refer to day 3 or day 5? 5. Is there an embryo guarantee? If yes, does it depend on the sperm quality? • Which standard is used for sperm assessment? • What happens if, despite good parameters, we do not receive the guaranteed number of embryos? Do we get our money back or a discount? 6. What happens if the IVF treatment remains unsuccessful? Do we get our money back if: • there are no egg cells to fertilise • there are fewer egg cells than the specified minimum • there was no embryo transfer despite fertilisation of the correct number of embryos • the number of embryos was lower than guaranteed 7. How much does an IVF treatment cost on average? Does that include the following: • appointment costs • ultrasound • preliminary and diagnostic examinations of the egg donor • hormonal stimulation of the donor • egg retrieval • ICSI egg fertilisation • other IVF laboratory methods, e.g. blastocyst culture or AH (assisted hatching) and embryo transfer • freezing of the embryos • FET in the patient's next cycle • further examinations of the patient and the donor, e.g. carrier screening 8. What is the general treatment plan? How many visits do I need on site / with my partner and alone? Which medical examinations can be carried out in Germany? When does the amount have to be paid? In advance, or is payment in instalments possible? Many thanks

Martina on 05.02.2024:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

As your enquiry involves specific questions that go beyond the written scope of this format, we will be happy to contact you separately for an online consultation. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello, I would like to have another baby. I have 2 boys and would like 1 girl — what can be done in this case? I recently had a miscarriage, and we do not know why either.

Susanna on 29.01.2024:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

We are very happy to carry out investigations after miscarriages at our institutes in Vienna and Baden. However, sex selection in the sense of determining the sex of embryos is not permitted in Austria, so there are only conservative options for influencing sperm selection in one direction or the other. We would be happy to advise you on this.

I have been married for 3 years and we have wanted a child ever since we got married, but according to the most recent semen analysis from November 2022, it turned out that becoming pregnant naturally would not be possible. I would like to find out about artificial insemination in general. What is needed for the initial examinations and how does the process work?

Silvia on 20.01.2024:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Please come to an initial consultation with the test results you currently have. In the initial consultation, existing results are discussed and it is decided which additional examinations are needed, while at the same time a suitable treatment is planned for you. Since most test results are only valid for a short time, we recommend consulting with us first in order to save you unnecessary trips.

Hello, my question: I already have a son (18 months) — we have now been trying our luck with child number 2 for 3 months — so far, unfortunately, without success. Now my question: does it already make sense to come to you? My son was born by caesarean section. But I do not think that matters. Just for your information. Unfortunately, I am very impatient — with my son it also only worked once I had stopped thinking about it and had sex whenever we felt like it. But now I know my cycle very precisely and yes — it is on my mind.

Dejana on 31.12.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

In fact, it is not uncommon for implantation problems or infections to occur after a caesarean section. We would be happy to carry out the relevant examinations.

Hello, is it possible to freeze one's own egg cells at your clinic, and how much would this cost?

Sarah on 21.12.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The cryopreservation of egg cells is possible under certain medical conditions. This requires a detailed medical history. In the case of cancer, part of the costs is covered by us. Please feel free to make a personal appointment.

Hello, I am now 37 and my partner is 32. Today we received the result of our latest IVF attempt — unfortunately negative again. We have already had 2 IVF attempts and 1 cryo transfer. Unfortunately, all 4 attempts were negative. I know that the Fund does not support any further attempts, so I wanted to know what else we could try? We were once pregnant naturally when I was 34 (but it turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy) and we had to have the left fallopian tube removed. On the right side, everything is supposedly fine. Could you give us advice on what else we could try, or whether it might make sense to attempt IVF again? Many thanks for your reply!

Carmen on 04.12.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

It is necessary to review all your test results together and decide whether, in your case, additional investigations (uterine lining, immunology, coagulation status, genetic tests, etc.) are needed. Although the Fund only supports 4 attempts financially, it is sometimes necessary to undergo more than 4 attempts to achieve a successful pregnancy. Especially in cases with previous ectopic pregnancies, it is important to discuss the medical history in detail. We would be happy to see you for a consultation appointment.

Hello Dr. Feichtinger, I wanted to know whether it is possible to have a semen analysis done at your clinic and what exactly is examined. I bought a home semen analysis kit and for quite some time I have been just below the WHO standard, even though I eat healthily, have lost 18 kilos, exercise regularly and take dietary supplements. I also recently saw a urologist and everything is OK. My blood count is very good. I hope you can help me.

Herbert on 26.11.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Please feel free to make an appointment for a semen analysis. In November we are running a men's health campaign and are also offering semen analyses free of charge. All parameters required by the WHO are examined.

Do we absolutely have to bring all test results to the initial consultation? We have not yet completed all the required examinations.

Roman on 23.10.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The initial consultation can indeed be conducted in more detail if previous results from earlier treatments are available. However, it is not necessary to bring all test results with you.

Good day, I wanted to enquire at what point one should turn to a fertility clinic if things do not work out naturally. Is there a specific point after a certain number of months?

Lara on 06.10.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

According to the guidelines, experts recommend an "evaluation for unfulfilled desire to have children" when, over the age of 35, you have been trying to conceive for 6 months (with regular unprotected intercourse) without success. Under the age of 35, a period of 6-12 months applies, depending on known previous diagnoses. In an initial fertility consultation, it can quickly be clarified which further steps or examinations are necessary.

I have a quick question. We have had 3 ICSI and 2 cryo attempts so far, all five unsuccessful. During the last ICSI, I received SMOFlipid infusions for the first time on the day of egg retrieval, as my killer cells are elevated. Now we want to start the next attempt, also a cryo transfer. My clinic says they want to give me the first infusion only on the day of the transfer and then again only after a positive pregnancy test. My question is: is the first infusion not too late? The infusion surely also needs time to take effect, and by the time it works, the embryo must have long since implanted — or am I seeing this wrong? I very much hope for an answer from you.

Valentina on 27.09.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Soy lipid infusions of all kinds are intended to positively support the immune system and are also given at our clinic as supportive therapy on the day of the transfer, and from a positive pregnancy test onwards every 4 weeks until the 12th week of pregnancy — in some cases even longer.

My gynaecologist noted that I should have my AMH tested on cycle day 20, but you at the clinic indicated day 2-3. What exactly is correct now? Since the test has to be paid for out of pocket, I would like to do it on the most useful cycle day. Thank you in advance!

Andrea on 11.09.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

AMH is less cycle-dependent than other hormones; the value fluctuates by about 20% from cycle to cycle. You can measure it either basally (= cycle day 2-3) or in the luteal phase (around cycle day 20), although the early measurement (cycle day 2-3) is more optimal.

Dear fertility team, I have already been undergoing fertility treatment for quite some time. My FSH level has been too high for several months — between 18 and 21. Therefore, no treatment can be carried out. The doctor told me that there is no longer any possibility of becoming pregnant. I know that at the age of just over 44 I have hardly any chances, but I wanted to get another opinion. A remote diagnosis is difficult, I know, but perhaps you have some information for me. Many thanks in advance

Anja on 06.09.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The probability of pregnancy at age 44 is in the single-digit percentage range — low, but present. Although high FSH levels argue against external stimulation with FSH, cycle monitoring can still be carried out in order to make the most of every opportunity, even in a cycle with high FSH levels at the outset.

Hello, my partner, 30 years old, and I, 27 years old, are currently in our eleventh cycle of trying overall (seventh cycle after a missed miscarriage). Is it still too early to come to you for further steps? My gynaecologist just said that I am still young and that it will happen eventually.

Cathrin on 29.08.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

After almost a year of "trying" to become pregnant, it would be time for some additional examinations in order to have sufficient information — regardless of the couple's age. We would be very happy to advise you in a joint personal consultation.

I will soon be 44, and my husband and I so dearly wish for another baby. We already have children together and, two years ago, we had to say goodbye to our baby in the 12th week of pregnancy because there was no longer a heartbeat. Since then, we simply have not been able to get pregnant again. Would we still receive help from you given our age? My gynaecologist always says everything is fine and ovulation is still regular, but due to our age the quality is simply no longer there.

Nadine on 28.08.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Unfortunately, the probability of pregnancy continues to decline over the course of our lives. However, since you already have children together, there is definitely a chance that you will become pregnant again. We would be very happy to support you in this. Please get in touch with us to arrange an initial consultation.

I am 27 years old and we have been trying to conceive naturally for a year. About 2 months ago I found out that I have PCOS, presumably caused by being overweight. My husband has already had a semen analysis done, which according to the doctor is excellent. My gynaecologist said that with PCOS I cannot become pregnant under any circumstances and that going through a fertility clinic is not promising either. Is this really the case? Do you offer an initial consultation where such questions and test results can be discussed?

Tamara on 15.06.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Please feel free to arrange an initial consultation with us in Vienna or Baden at any time. Especially with diagnoses such as PCOS, we are the first point of contact when it comes to fertility, and treatment in such cases is by no means always synonymous with artificial insemination. There are many other treatment options on the path to your longed-for baby, which we would be happy to discuss with you in person.

Good day! I am 39 years old and had a tubal ligation 7 years ago. I have a new partner and we wish for a child together. My question would be: could I become pregnant through artificial insemination?

Raffaela on 13.06.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

If the fallopian tubes are not patent, IVF/ICSI treatment can help achieve a pregnancy. However, there is no Fund support after a voluntary tubal ligation. We would be happy to advise you in person.

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby naturally for 1.5 years. After a year, we went to a fertility centre to find out why it was not working. I already have children from another man. However, my last pregnancy was 12 years ago. Various tests revealed that my right fallopian tube is not patent, but the left one is. Otherwise, everything is fine with me. My husband's semen analysis was done twice, 4 months apart, and both were very similar. The result was actually quite okay — according to the doctor, not the best, but not bad. During the entire evaluation period, I was also pregnant three times, but I miscarried in the 5th week of pregnancy once and in the 4th week the other two times. After that, we decided on ICSI. After the entire stimulation phase, 7 usable egg cells were retrieved. The fertilisation rate was excellent — all 7 — and according to the embryologists, 5 of them looked perfect. On day five, we were scheduled for the transfer, and we were told that only one was left; the others had stopped developing on day 3, and the remaining one had not yet reached the blastocyst stage and was one day behind. It was also heavily fragmented, and the probability of a pregnancy resulting from it was 15%. Indeed, no pregnancy occurred. At the follow-up consultation, we were told that my egg quality is very poor, hence the result, and that apart from taking additional vitamins there is nothing else — for the next attempt, we should use time-lapse, calcium and EmbryoGlue, then the chances might be better. I asked whether a more detailed genetic evaluation would make sense, but I was advised against it and instead advised towards egg donation, which my husband vehemently rejects. We would like to make one final attempt in October of this year, but we do not really know what still makes sense in our case. What else can I do so that the embryos continue to develop and do not all stop growing?

Natalie on 11.06.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

When there have been many previous attempts, it should be carefully assessed which additional examinations make sense depending on cell quality, fertilisation rate, age and medical history. Cell quality itself can only be influenced to a very limited extent from the outside, as it often depends on genetic factors. There is some data on dietary supplements, but in any case it is helpful to review all your test results in order to be able to give a sound assessment.

Hello, I will turn 34 in June and I have a 14-year-old daughter, and my partner and I would like a second child, but it has never worked — since the birth of my daughter I have never become pregnant again, no abortion and no miscarriage. I learned from my gynaecologist that I have small mucous cysts; he said my ovaries are fine. Can you help me with how I could become pregnant, or with fertility treatment?

Daniela on 25.05.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Mucous cysts, or so-called nabothian cysts, should indeed not stand in the way of another pregnancy; nevertheless, there is a range of other possible causes to consider. Only a few of these can be diagnosed by ultrasound. Please feel free to arrange a consultation appointment to discuss the evaluation of immunological factors, coagulation factors, inflammatory processes and the like.

Hello, I have a question. I am now — or rather will soon be — 44 and my partner would so love to have another baby, but it does not work for me without help, as I need treatment. That was also the case with my two boys. Now my question: is it still possible for me to have a baby at my age?

Anja on 24.05.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The probability of pregnancy from the age of 42 is indeed greatly reduced, but still present. Please feel free to make an appointment, bringing any previous test results from your treatments, so that we can inform you about all the options and advise you as best as possible!

Do you also treat patients with PCO, or am I in the wrong place with you?

Lara on 10.05.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

We treat patients with PCOS both with and without a desire to have children. Please feel free to come to us for an appointment!

I took the pill (Maxim) for 10 years. Now I would like to freeze my egg cells and have my initial consultation coming up soon. Is it helpful to stop taking the pill as early as possible, or does this have no influence?

Tamara on 08.05.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Egg freezing in Austria is only permitted where there is a medical indication. In this respect, an initial advisory consultation is advisable in any case.

Hello, do you have experience with type 1 diabetes patients? My partner's semen analysis is very poor and the 5th transfer has now also failed. Could my diabetes also be a factor? My levels are very well controlled — HbA1c 5.3! And I already have an 8-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

Nina on 04.05.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients should be well controlled before treatment. Neither the diabetes itself nor the medications used have a primarily negative effect. It should be examined in detail what, apart from the reduced sperm quality, the possible causes of the unsuccessful treatments so far may have been.

If I want to undergo in vitro fertilisation, do I have to report this at work?

Kerstin on 02.05.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Your employer does not need to be informed of medical treatments in the field of reproductive medicine.

I would like to know the difference (effect, use) between Duphaston and inositol?

Annika on 27.04.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Inositol and Duphaston are two different substances. Inositol is a component of the cell membrane and indirectly influences several messenger substances in the body. Duphaston is a synthetic gestagen, i.e. a hormone (progesterone).

Dear fertility team! My husband, born in 1972, had a successful vasectomy in 2017. Now, however, we do feel the desire to have a child after all. We already have children from our first marriages, but none together. I am now 37 years old and have never used hormonal contraception. Our question is whether there are options for assisted reproduction, as we now do wish to have a child together. And also whether your fertility institute is the right place for us. We look forward to your reply.

Andrea on 15.03.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

After a vasectomy, assisted reproduction is possible. While there is no support from the Austrian IVF Fund for this, all procedures can be carried out at our institutes in Baden & Vienna. In an initial consultation, we clarify all questions and plan the next steps right away. We look forward to meeting you.

Are an immunology work-up and a karyogram necessary to carry out IVF treatment, and are the costs covered by the IVF Fund or do you have to pay for them yourself? Kind regards

Ludwig on 07.03.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

An immunology work-up and/or a karyogram is not routinely required before IVF treatment. This testing is only necessary in individual cases; the costs must then be paid by the patient and are not covered.

Hello, what is the ideal vitamin D level for an ICSI? Thank you!

Doris on 02.03.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Vitamin D serum levels are subject to strong seasonal fluctuations. You should make sure that the values are between 30-40 nmol/l and supplement if necessary. Vitamin D is important above all for the immune system and the bones.

My FSH value is 83, I wanted to ask what can be done in such a case? Can it be lowered? Or is assisted reproduction the only option here?

Julia on 01.03.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Strongly elevated FSH values can indicate an unstable cycle and a reduced ovarian reserve. Unfortunately, hormonal stimulation is not a solution here. What makes sense in your individual case should be clarified in a personal consultation.

We would like to become pregnant for the third time. However, because of an operation, I still have to take Eliquis 5mg for 2 months. I will then probably have to switch to heparin. The question is whether I have already damaged my egg cells by taking Eliquis, or whether it is sufficient to switch to heparin once fertilization has taken place.

Anna on 10.01.2023:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Eliquis works by inhibiting coagulation factor Xa. Because the substance crosses the placenta, patients are switched to heparin during pregnancy. However, according to current knowledge, Eliquis does not damage the egg cells.

I am 38 years old and have been trying to have a child with my partner for 1.5 years. We have already had several inseminations at another clinic and would now like to switch to ICSI. From your point of view, which is more advisable: a transfer after 3 or 5 days? What is recommended at your clinic, or which is more often successful?

Selma on 28.12.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The success of an IVF/ICSI treatment cannot be directly measured by whether the embryo transfer takes place on day 3 or day 5. While selection on day 5 is more meaningful, this does not directly influence the pregnancy rate. At our clinic, we aim for blastocyst transfer (day 5), but we also have notable success with day 3 transfers. This decision depends on several factors. Please give us a call!

Hello, can one still attempt IVF with these values, or is it rather unlikely to become pregnant? Please let me know :-( thank you very much!
Prolactin 9.1 AMH 0.3 LH 7.5

Beate on 22.12.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

These values alone, especially without knowing the units, do not rule out a pregnancy. Whether and how much stimulation is possible should be discussed in a personal consultation. Please give us a call!

Dear Wunschbaby team! I am 26 years old and learned from a hormone profile that our unfulfilled desire to have a child, which has lasted 19 months, is probably due to my AMH value of only 0.88 or to my strongly elevated prolactin level last year (which was treated with cabergoline/no abnormalities of the pituitary gland). Can I still become pregnant despite a low AMH value but a good semen analysis for my husband?

Lara on 12.05.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

A low AMH value only tells us something about the ovarian reserve, not about the probability of pregnancy. Nevertheless, an AMH value below 1 at such a young age indicates that the time window before the ovarian reserve is depleted is considerably smaller. Please feel free to arrange an initial consultation with us so that we can advise you optimally and, above all, promptly.

Dear Sir or Madam, a couple I know would like to have IVF with you. The man is insured in Austria, but his partner (not married) is insured in Belgium. Could you please tell me what IVF will cost for them? Should they pay privately or through the IVF Fund?

Sabine on 13.04.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

To make use of the Austrian IVF Fund, it is necessary to have your main residence in Austria and to be married or in a registered partnership. You must have Austrian social insurance and the treatment must be medically indicated. Based on your description, there is no entitlement to IVF Fund support, and the treatment, if indicated, would have to be paid for privately.

Dear Sir or Madam! I have tried twice to have children, with a negative result. And please, I would like to know how to make an enquiry. Which documents do my wife and I need? Is there an Arabic-speaking person available, so that my wife and I can explain more? As the doctor said, we have no health problems - when can we make an enquiry?

Mustafa on 12.04.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

As far as we can gather from your enquiry, you may be well served by our Arabic-speaking patient coordinator. Please contact our institute in Baden on 02252 206857 for further information!

I am almost 40 (birthday in April) and wanted to make another attempt now. I already have a child (from a previous relationship, 15 years old, conceived back then after only 2 months). I was 22 years old at the time and still young. Since my current husband suffers from azoospermia, we underwent IVF in 2011 and 2012 (when I was 29 and 30 years old) in Wels with Dr. Loimayr. Back then I had only 6 egg cells at the retrieval and then 5 egg cells. Of these, first 2 and then 1 embryo were transferred. The quality of the egg cells was so-so. I should also say that my husband underwent a TESE for this. We were younger then, and for me it was associated with enormous stress; actually I could not come to terms with it at all at the time (assisted reproduction), but I went through with it anyway. I think that played a big role. I then did the 2nd attempt, but after the transfer I ended up in hospital because I had such severe diarrhoea and vomiting and felt terrible, even though I am really not sensitive to pain at all. However, no hyperstimulation was diagnosed. My AMH was 4 at the time. For the above reasons we took a break until now and actually gave up. We did an adoption preparation course, but unfortunately nothing came of that either. Now I am almost 40 and the whole issue has come up again. Unfortunately, my cycle is now very irregular, between 30 and 65 days (every 3rd month 65), and my AMH is 0.67, even though it was only evaluated the next day, which is not supposed to make much difference. FSH is 7, so normal, but TSH is 3.8 and DHEA is 0.8. I have now been given Euthyrox 50 for the fertility treatment and DHEA. My cycle worries me. I would like to do an ICSI with donor sperm. It is also important to me that the donor is not anonymous and that the sperm donation is from 2020, as it matters to me that the donation was made before the corona vaccination, i.e. that the donor is unvaccinated. In 2020 I had a four-level thrombosis in the pelvic vein; I was hospitalized and subsequently took Eliquis for several months and then Inhixa injections, for a total of one year. Unfortunately, this also disrupted my cycle considerably; particularly because of the injections it became longer and never settled back down. I recently went back to the fertility clinic in Wels (TFP), where I was told there is practically no point and that I should go abroad for an egg donation. I actually felt very much brushed off. Since this is also a financial but above all an ethical factor for me (anonymity of the donors etc., it would be a double donation in this case), I cannot really imagine it. What do you think? Are my chances really that bad? I do not know what to do, and I would also need help to regulate my cycle again. Thank you very much

Madeleine on 09.03.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Thank you very much for the detailed account of your history so far. According to your description, the underlying cause of the somewhat irregular cycle appears to be the reduced ovarian reserve. The thrombosis you experienced naturally also makes stimulation treatment somewhat riskier, with uncertain success. It is understandable that the prospect of a donation raises some subjective ethical questions. However, such treatment can also be carried out non-anonymously in Austria, completely legally and in accordance with the law. We would be happy to advise you in detail and personally about your effective chances and options with and without gamete donation.

Good day, I am 39 and unfortunately have only now found the partner who would also like to have a child. My gynaecologist says that I have a 3cm fibroid in the uterus which is preventing a pregnancy. Otherwise everything is normal. She says that abdominal surgery is necessary for this and that I would then have to pause for two years afterwards. Since, because of my age, I do not have time to wait another two years, I have an urgent question: is it not possible to remove this fibroid from below as well, to spare me the abdominal incision and thus the long waiting time? I look forward to your positive reply, with many thanks in advance!

Beate on 09.03.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Depending on their location, fibroids can be removed hysteroscopically (via the uterine cavity) or laparoscopically (via keyhole surgery). Very rarely, an abdominal incision is also necessary. Whether the fibroid in question could actually interfere with implantation depends on whether it narrows the uterine cavity. After such procedures, you should wait up to 6 months before attempting a pregnancy. We would be happy to advise you individually in a personal consultation.

Good day. We are dependent on donor sperm ... How high do you estimate the chances of becoming pregnant with it? My wife is 27 years old and everything is fine with her.

Tim on 23.02.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Where the indication for using donor sperm is purely male and the patient is young — under 30 years of age — the probability of pregnancy is exceptionally high, provided the fallopian tubes are patent and there are no cycle irregularities. We would be happy to advise you on how to proceed.

I am 39 years old and had my tubes tied 9 years ago, but we now wish to have a child again. What are the chances here, and what effort should we expect? Thank you very much. Kind regards

Nina on 23.02.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

After the fallopian tubes have been severed, assisted reproduction is possible at any time. Unfortunately, however, there is no funding for treatment after elective sterilization. Please feel free to contact us for a personal initial/planning consultation.

Dear Sir or Madam, I came across your clinic through my naturopath, which is why I am writing this enquiry. I am 44 years old, have 2 children aged 5 and 8, and we still had the wish for a third child. In 2020/2021 I was pregnant three times, but in all 3 cases I had a missed miscarriage in the first trimester. After the 3 miscarriages, an estriol deficiency was diagnosed, but no clear statement was made as to whether this could be connected to them. Otherwise, all hormone values were fine. For a year now we have been trying for another pregnancy, so far unfortunately without success. I would be pleased to hear from you whether there are options for support at your clinic, and I wish you a healthy and successful year 2022. Warm regards

Sabrina on 28.01.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

There are a number of diagnostic tests in the fields of immunology, coagulation diagnostics and genetics. Pre-implantation diagnosis can often be helpful. Additional, sufficient hormonal support can be provided at any time. We also offer our initial consultations virtually and would be happy to advise you in detail!

Question regarding the IVF Fund: My husband was diagnosed with asthenozoospermia and I with a blocked right fallopian tube - do we qualify for the IVF Fund with this, or must both fallopian tubes be blocked? Thank you very much

Nadja on 26.01.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

A pathological semen analysis result is on its own a way of claiming IVF Fund entitlement.

Hello! I am 25 years old and have had 5 miscarriages so far. I have had genetic testing done together with my husband, immunology, hysteroscopy, my husband did a semen analysis and everything was fine, but it is always a recurrent miscarriage and it happens at 7-8 weeks of pregnancy. What should I do next, I do not know myself? Do you have any plans for me? Thank you

Agata on 26.01.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

There is the option of coagulation-genetic testing and of genetic testing of egg cells or embryos as part of assisted reproduction. We would be happy to advise you personally in this regard.

Hello, I will be 48 years old in March and would like to have another child together with my new partner. My period is very regular, every 28 days. Could ovarian rejuvenation be attempted in my case? Thank you very much and kind regards

Clara on 13.01.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Pregnancy rates through spontaneous conception from the age of 45 onwards are significantly reduced. Nevertheless, a pregnancy is possible with a regular cycle. Whether ovarian rejuvenation treatment is necessary is something we can gladly clarify in a consultation.

Hello, I am 36, a type 1 diabetic. I almost never get my period; for a while my doctor prescribed me the pill, and then I got it more often. At the moment I do not have a boyfriend and am therefore not taking the pill, and now my menstruation has stopped again. Of course I would still like to have a child, but time is slowly running out as well. Could the absence of my menstruation be due to a hormone deficiency, if it works with the pill and not without it? And can one still become pregnant? Would assisted reproduction even help in such a case? Kind regards

Sabine on 10.01.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Amenorrhoea, i.e. the absence of the period, should always be clarified hormonally. Depending on your desire to have children, hormonal stimulation can then be used to initiate a cycle. The absence of menstruation alone does not necessarily mean that IVF/ICSI treatment must be carried out, but depending on the cause, it can certainly be an option. I would be happy to see you for a personal initial consultation in Baden.

Good evening, I am 30 and my husband is 36, we have been trying to have children for 10 years and it is not working. We have done all the tests and everything is fine. We would like to try assisted reproduction with you — does everything have to be paid privately?

Daniela on 04.01.2022:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

In various cases, the IVF Fund provides support if certain criteria are met. So an IVF/ICSI treatment does not automatically have to be paid for privately. Please come to us in person for an initial consultation with the test results you already have.

Dear Wunschbaby team! My partner and I have been trying to conceive for at least 3 years. According to my now-retired gynaecologist, I was diagnosed with PCO (I do not know which type). No success. Unfortunately, on top of that, my partner is back in treatment for his malignant melanoma and in the meantime is not allowed to attempt natural conception. (He also had treatment 2 years ago.) It has apparently massively impaired his sperm quality. He is 41 and I am 33. Time is pressing somewhat. Is a sperm donation from a third party possible right away, even without a semen analysis?

Franziska on 29.12.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Donor sperm can only be used if it has been clearly demonstrated that a pregnancy cannot be achieved otherwise. I recommend an initial consultation for advice and a current semen analysis to assess the situation and the chances with ICSI.

What is your experience and what are the chances of success with endometriosis patients? We have 4 unsuccessful IVF attempts behind us.

Nadine on 17.12.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The pregnancy probabilities for endometriosis patients depend very strongly on the age of the patient and the type and classification of the endometriosis. This means the question cannot be answered definitively. Based on your previous treatment protocols, we could advise you professionally with regard to the chances of success of a new treatment.

My wife has cysts on her ovaries, which is why she cannot become pregnant. She has also seen a doctor at the hospital. So far she has not received any positive result. Is there a solution for this?

Herbert on 08.12.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Based on your enquiry, I suspect that this is a case of polycystic ovaries. Here, ultra-low-dose stimulation treatment can help very well. At our Baden location, we have Arabic-speaking patient coordinators and medical staff, which may make it possible to discuss the situation in detail.

Dear Sir or Madam, do you also offer natural-cycle IVF at your centre? And: where do the egg cells in your bank come from, and what do the donors receive in return? Thank you very much

Nina on 25.11.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

We offer natural-cycle IVF at both our locations in Vienna and Baden, when this is medically appropriate. In the case of egg donations, we work together with an international egg donation bank.

Over the last 9 years we have had 4 children naturally (the last one 3 years ago) and always became pregnant within 1-3 cycles. I am now 39 years old, and for a year, despite cycle tracking etc., no pregnancy has occurred. Over the last 10 years I have had to endure several miscarriages, the last one in summer 2021. Time is running out for me, and I am very afraid that it will no longer work so easily.

Therese on 24.11.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Depending on the mode of delivery of previous pregnancies, on the basic medical history and on age, various immunological and histological examinations are possible, which then give relatively precise information on how best to continue treatment. We would be very happy to advise you on all options and forms of therapy in a detailed consultation.

Good day, do you offer assisted reproduction with sex selection?

Alexander on 15.11.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Determining the sex of the embryo is only permitted in Austria in strict exceptional cases (serious diseases inherited via the sex chromosomes).

Dear Doctor, I would like to ask whether unexplained infertility can also give rise to an entitlement to the IVF Fund? According to the examinations, we are both healthy, and yet in about 2 years we have not become pregnant either naturally or with the help of IUI. Is there a financing option in our case? Thank you very much!

Lisa on 10.11.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Some treatments are covered by the Fund because the Fund's inclusion criteria are met, even if the couple is "medically healthy". We also speak of idiopathic infertility. This requires a careful review of your test results. Please feel free to arrange an initial consultation appointment at our Baden or Vienna location with all the results you have collected.

Dear Dr. Nazira Pitsinis, I was diagnosed with adenomyosis (via ultrasound). 1st ICSI negative with normal stimulation, 2nd ICSI negative with high stimulation (same result: 5 egg cells, 3 at retrieval, only 1 ever survives; according to the lab, very good embryos). After the 2nd stimulation, extreme pain on day 5 after the negative test, tissue discharge. What now....? Should we now test for killer cells, do a biopsy, and then a light stimulation ...

Renate on 09.11.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

To evaluate previous stimulations, it is important to look at the stimulation and laboratory protocols. After unsuccessful attempts, depending on the case, we examine the endometrium, the immune and/or coagulation system, and genetic testing may also be necessary. Situations after previous stimulations in particular are complex, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. We would be very happy to take the time for a personal consultation.

I was diagnosed with a narrowing of the cervix - during a fallopian tube patency examination, which then had to be aborted because of it … My question now is… could an unfulfilled desire to have a child be due to this? And could this be corrected at your institute?

Anna on 02.11.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Narrowings of the uterine cavity should be diagnosed precisely (3D vaginal ultrasound and/or hysteroscopy, i.e. an examination of the uterine cavity). Some of these narrowings must be removed surgically. For this, we work together with experienced hospitals. These procedures are not performed at the institute.

Good day, my wife and I would like to start our fertility journey. According to previous examinations, my wife is perfectly healthy and there is no medical indication that would make the IVF Fund applicable. Could you please send us information by email about the process of an IVF or ICSI, including a breakdown of costs? How the attempts are counted, etc. We are from Tyrol and have heard a great deal of good about your clinic.

Tamara on 27.10.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Good day, we would be very happy to support you on your path to your longed-for baby. Since idiopathic infertility can also be a cause, it would be important for us to review your test results in order to provide a correct breakdown of costs. Perhaps you would like to send these to us in advance and subsequently arrange an initial consultation in Baden or Vienna? At our Baden location we also offer free online orientation talks every two weeks, which can help you clarify the most important questions in advance before you make the journey from Tyrol for the initial consultation.

My wife and I were told by a fertility clinic that we could turn to you regarding donor sperm for insemination. We would now like to know how this works and what it all costs?

Herbert on 26.10.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The use of sperm donation and egg donation (third-party gametes) can be carried out at our locations in Vienna and Baden for a wide range of medical situations. This requires an initial consultation, during which the procedure, indication, costs and logistics are discussed in approximately one hour. You are welcome to make an appointment with us at any time. We will be happy to advise you.

I was diagnosed with varicose veins in the uterus and PCOS. Can I get pregnant with the varicose veins, or do they need to be treated first?

Kerstin on 12.10.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

"Varicose veins" in the pelvis, or pelvic varicosis, do not require any further treatment and are quite common. They are not an obstacle to pregnancy. PCOS should be treated in a gynaecological practice (if you are not trying to conceive) or, if you do wish to have a child, at a fertility centre. We would be happy to support you at one of our locations.

Good day, could you please explain to us how an IVF cycle would work and how the attempts are calculated. Do you get a certain number of attempts included, or do you always pay per attempt?

Nathalie on 10.10.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

For an IVF treatment supported by the IVF Fund in Austria, there must be a medical indication, the woman must be under 40 years of age and the man under 50. In addition, the couple must be married or in a registered partnership, hold Austrian social insurance and have their main residence in Austria. The Fund then covers 70% of the costs per attempt. For more detailed information, we offer online information consultations at WIF Baden. You will find the available appointments for these 15-minute consultations on our homepage, where you can also register directly.

Good day, my partner (42) and I (37) have been trying to have a child for almost 3 years. Due to my partner's egg quality, egg donation is now our only option. All other findings for her and me are perfectly normal (semen analysis etc.) We have already visited a clinic in the Czech Republic, but we did not feel we were in the best hands there. No treatment has taken place yet. We very much want to become pregnant through egg donation this year. Can you help us with this? Many thanks for a prompt reply - a suggested appointment would also be welcome. Best regards

Valetin on 04.10.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Of course, at WIF we also support couples through egg donation cycles at both of our locations in Vienna and Baden. Please contact us by phone in Baden this week so that we can arrange the earliest possible appointment with you.

Good day, I had a HyCoSy on cycle day 5 (but I was still bleeding) - I am now a little worried that the bleeding could cause endometriosis to develop. Can you tell me anything about this?

Kerstin on 01.10.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The development of endometriosis is not fully understood; some theories assume that changes in the immune system play a role, or that cells of the uterine lining settle in other parts of the body. In any case, endometriosis does not develop suddenly, so you need not worry about the tubal patency test.

COVID vaccination when trying to conceive and during assisted reproduction - yes or no?

Saskia on 20.09.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Vaccination is recommended both for couples trying to conceive and for pregnant patients.

Good day, I have a question: my partner & I have been trying to have a child for about a year. I stopped taking the pill at the end of September. My hormone profile was normal, my partner had a semen analysis done & it showed hypospermia - is that the reason we are not getting pregnant? Would a tubal flushing help? Thank you in advance. Kind regards

Doris on 20.09.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Hypospermia can be a cause of unfulfilled desire to have children. With a mildly reduced semen analysis and open fallopian tubes, an intrauterine insemination (placing sperm into the uterus) can successfully lead to pregnancy. What matters here is how many rapidly motile sperm are actually present and whether the fallopian tubes are open. Please feel free to make an appointment, and we will discuss a sensible way forward with you.

Can an EMMA test, or the biopsy for it, also be performed at one's own request? Without being in fertility treatment or having a referral for it? I assume the costs would have to be paid privately anyway.. I would be very, very grateful for an answer! Kind regards

Cornelia on 26.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Of course, you can have a microbiome test performed at our clinic at any time.

Can the bacterial colonisation of the vagina also provide information about the bacterial colonisation of the uterus? For example, a persistent lack of lactobacilli in the vagina

Andrea on 24.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

We often compare the result of the endometrial biopsy with that of the vaginal flora; however, they are fundamentally not always similar and do not allow direct conclusions.

What disadvantages result from the biopsy - would there be an increased risk of miscarriage in a possible pregnancy because the uterus is slightly injured by the biopsy?

Birgit on 23.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

The biopsy is hardly painful and there are no disadvantages for a subsequent pregnancy

Is there an increased risk or any indications of an abnormal uterine microbiome?

Sandra on 22.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Recurrent infections can be an indication of an imbalance of the microflora.

Is there an alternative to the EMMA test?

Stefanie on 17.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Theoretically, a swab for normal lactobacilli can be taken from a standard endometrial biopsy, but this is not comparable to the far more precise (genetic) determination of the microbial colonisation of the endometrium.

Good day! I keep reading about age limits regarding egg donation. My question is therefore: is there a maximum age for the donor and the recipient, and at 46 is it already too late for an embryo transfer? Kind regards

Karola on 11.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Indeed, the Austrian Reproductive Medicine Act regulates the age limits for the donor (18 to 30 years of age) and for the recipient up to the age of 45. At 46, egg donation is therefore no longer possible in Austria. Neighbouring countries have higher age limits.

Good day, I would like to ask whether, in your centre, you also work with "additional" tests when assessing sperm quality (e.g. MAR test, vitality test, genetic fragmentation..)? Do you have experience treating patients with a positive MAR test (antisperm antibodies)? Thank you very much!

Gerlinde on 09.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

At our fertility clinic, we perform sperm selection using the CHIPSI and PICSI methods. These are selection, vitality and hyaluronic acid binding capacity tests. In our view, the presence of sperm antibodies in the ejaculate plays a subordinate role; very often, processing the ejaculate and separating clumped immune-sperm complexes, followed by insemination, is helpful. A positive MAR test must always be considered in the overall context of the medical history.

Unfortunately, my first treatment was unsuccessful - is it possible to switch to another clinic afterwards?

Kristin on 05.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Yes, of course, at any time!

We have already had 3 failed ICSI procedures, and it is because of my husband's sperm. What is the difference between ICSI, PICSI or CHIPSI? Which is better?

Sarah on 04.08.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

ICSI stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection and is a method of fertilising the egg cell. Physiological ICSI (PICSI) refers to the prior selection of sperm based on their hyaluronic acid binding capacity, and CHIPSI is a selection method using a chip chamber based on motility and DNA fragmentation.

Which method is best for you must be determined based on the laboratory protocols of your previous treatments and the current semen analysis. If the sperm count is severely reduced, performing a selection method may not be possible.

Good evening! I became pregnant twice within eight months and both times without success… (the second ended yesterday) Two months ago I saw a fertility specialist who said that getting pregnant becomes more difficult with age (40), and that I already have two children anyway, and he wished me luck and sent me home… My gynaecologist also sent me home yesterday, when my bleeding started, because she could not do anything…. Are there really no therapies here, apart from assisted reproduction or egg donation? For example, medication? Kind regards

Martha on 28.07.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

It is true that the pregnancy rate is lower from the age of 35 onwards and decreases with increasing age. Unfortunately, due to the increased occurrence of DNA strand breaks, the tendency to miscarry also rises somewhat. However, I do not think that these two sad events mean you must immediately consider egg donation. Please feel free to make an appointment so that we can calmly discuss which treatment might be suitable for you.

We would like to have a child. Three years ago, my husband had the problem of collapsing at work several times, and this apparently injured his lumbar spine. He then also frequently had pain in the testicular area. For some time now, he has had complaints in the intimate area. Very frequent urge to urinate and a hydrocele. Using ultrasound, the urologist found that 60% of the sperm were fine, and he advised us against a spontaneous pregnancy. What steps can we take, since we would like to have children soon? I am 31 and my husband is 35.

Franziska on 25.07.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

A semen analysis should include a determination of sperm concentration, motility and morphology. At the same time, a semen analysis is always a snapshot in time and depends strongly on external influences (diet, sleep, stress, alcohol, nicotine, exercise).

If a semen analysis appears reduced on a single occasion, we would repeat it in order to assess the situation better, and then be happy to plan a suitable therapy with you. Please feel free to make an appointment for your partner's semen analysis at any time.

Hello, I have had 6 miscarriages so far. Growth always stops at around week 9 of pregnancy. There was always a heartbeat. I have a healthy child; before her, I had 2 miscarriages. After her came the 4 that I had between June 2020 and May 2021. As a precaution, I took heparin, Utrogestan and cortisone from a positive pregnancy test onwards. In addition, I have been taking Euthyrox 75 since December 2019. Now my doctor wants to start with these as early as ovulation. Does that make sense? In my last pregnancies, I already took them 4 days before the positive test? What could be the reason that growth stops? Genetics were examined, and everything was normal with the embryo too.

Kerstin on 24.06.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

That is of course a sad story. Starting miscarriage prophylaxis from ovulation onwards is possible; however, in addition to genetic testing, it is also important to examine the uterine lining. Please feel free to make an appointment for a consultation, bringing all your collected findings, so that we can plan a possible way forward.

Good day, we have a 2-year-old son. We would like to have another child! My husband has very good sperm quality and I am said to be fertile; unfortunately, I do not ovulate, and I am still breastfeeding my son! Would that affect a new pregnancy? This time we are hoping for twins. There are already twins and triplets in my family, conceived through assisted reproduction. What therapy can you recommend so that our wish comes true? I am 33 and my husband is 38. Thank you very much

Doris on 15.06.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

During breastfeeding, the hormone prolactin that is released occasionally suppresses ovulation. It would make sense to carry out cycle monitoring to see whether this is the case for you. With cycle monitoring, the optimal time for intercourse can then be determined. In fertility medicine, we do not actively try to promote multiple pregnancies, as these are always associated with risks during pregnancy.

I am 39 years old and have had no luck with a pregnancy so far (2 miscarriages). One unsuccessful ICSI; unfortunately, trisomy was diagnosed in the remaining embryos using EmbryoMap, and they were therefore discarded. What chances do I have with further treatment? Or would egg donation already be the more sensible option?

Kathrin on 30.05.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Based purely on your description, I do not yet see an indication for egg donation. Certainly, some immunological tests and supportive treatment for a possible tendency to miscarry (miscarriage prophylaxis) can help. Please feel free to make an appointment for a consultation to review all existing findings and plan a suitable treatment method.

I would like to have fertility treatment in January 2022. How does it all work - can I choose what the DNA of the sperm donor is like?

Tamara on 27.05.2021:

Dr. Nazira Pitsinis answered this question.

Due to legal regulations, only couples can be treated in Austria. Sperm donation is possible when a female couple share the wish to have a child together, or when heterosexual couples cannot achieve a pregnancy due to the absence of functional sperm cells. A suitable donor is selected in each case. For further details, please feel free to arrange an initial consultation at our institute.

Hello dear Wunschbaby team, my wife and I (a same-sex couple) would like to have a child together. I would like to carry it (age 34, turning 35 in July); my wife is the same age. Is it nevertheless possible for her egg to be fertilised and for me to carry it? Many thanks in advance. Warm regards

Antonia on 27.04.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Dear both, yes, this is possible in principle. The strict rules governing egg donation to a third party do not apply within a partnership. Please arrange a consultation with us at our institute for this.

Good day, I have MRKH syndrome; I was born without a uterus and also have no period and no vagina. However, I have functioning egg cells that are in the normal position. I am planning to start a surrogacy programme abroad using my own egg cells. My question to you would be whether stimulation and egg retrieval through the abdomen (laparoscopically) would be possible in my case? Can your clinic freeze my embryos and send them to the desired clinic abroad? Kind regards

Elisabeth on 26.04.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Unfortunately, we cannot perform laparoscopic egg retrieval at our institute, as we do not have a large operating theatre. Please enquire at the women's hospital in Vienna (AKH), Linz, Graz or Innsbruck as to whether this might be possible there.

Dear Dr. Feichtinger! I have already had 2 ICSIs, which I had performed at your institute, and unfortunately they were not successful. Brief information: I am 26 years old and only have one fallopian tube left. We settled both attempts through the IVF Fund. Now to my questions: is there the possibility of natural-cycle IVF at your institute, i.e. stimulation with egg retrieval? If so, approximately how much would the egg retrieval cost? Do you think that being overweight makes it harder to get pregnant? I was told that I have PCOS, but I ovulate and have my period completely normally (measured basal temperature). I hope I have not written too much now:-) Unfortunately, after 3 years, my husband and I are quite close to giving up. Have a lovely Sunday! Kind regards

Leonie on 25.04.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

We would be happy to carry out minimal stimulation or a natural cycle as well. We would just need to review your case in a face-to-face consultation and discuss with you whether this would be an advantage or rather a disadvantage for you. Pregnancy rates are demonstrably reduced in women who are overweight. I therefore advise you, should you be overweight, to lose weight in order to improve your chances. We would be happy to discuss the details with you in a personal consultation.

I read the article on COVID vaccination and fertility from 18.12.2020. Are there any new findings on this topic? I live in Germany and am torn. Of course, I would like to have a child in the future. However, since one often reads that the vaccination affects the genes, I wonder whether a vaccination might lead to infertility or whether the newborn could be disabled because the genetic material has been altered?

Maria on 24.04.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Dear Ms S, the vaccination has no negative effect whatsoever on your fertility or the fertility of your husband. On the contrary, a coronavirus infection can cause infertility. A vaccination also has only positive effects on a pregnancy and is recommended by most doctors. A negative influence on the child is definitely not to be feared, and quite a number of children have already been conceived and born after a COVID vaccination.

Good day! I am 29, gynaecologically healthy as far as I know, and have never been pregnant. My boyfriend is only 24 and does not want a child for at least five years. Would you recommend social freezing to me, or is it not worthwhile? Is 34 already dangerously late to get pregnant without problems? I know I would have to go abroad for this. Thank you for your help!

Kerstin on 09.04.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

You are both still quite young, so it would hardly be necessary. To be on the safe side, have a hormone profile done with LH, FSH, PRL and AMH, as well as oestradiol (at the beginning of your cycle).

Dear Mr Feichtinger, I already have a daughter. During the pregnancy, a complete cervical cerclage was performed due to a previous conisation. In the end, a caesarean section had to be carried out. We have now been trying to get pregnant again for over a year. Hormonally, everything is normal with me. My husband's semen analysis likewise. We have now stimulated with letrozole for 4 cycles without success. Recently, I had a tubal flushing done. The doctor said that the previous cervical closure can be clearly seen. The tissue is not smooth as normal, but rather scarred. Now to my question: could this fact also be a reason for our unfulfilled desire to have children?

Paulin on 08.04.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, of course. The best approach is a hysteroscopy with a subsequent bacteriological and histological examination, followed by a discussion of how to proceed: whether and which treatments still make sense.

Dear Univ. Prof. Dr. Feichtinger, my partner and I began having examinations in Hungary because I have not been pregnant for years. My partner is healthy, I am not. I am 48 years old. Some results of earlier tests: DNA fragmentation 37.4% Sperm analysis 0.8 M/ml A pioneering test confirmed hypospermia and severe OATSM The ROS level is high There is no genetic variation and no Y-chromosome microdeletion Since I live in Austria and my partner and I are planning our life together here, I am writing now. My question: In my case, is it possible to conceive naturally while taking a medication, since my partner is afraid of the possible side effects of hormone therapy? Or insemination in the form of insemination? I look forward to your kind answer! Kind regards

Christiane on 04.04.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Please arrange a consultation with us to clarify this somewhat unclear situation and to determine how to proceed.

Dear Dr. Feichtinger, my wife and I already have 2 daughters and would soon like a third child (our wish would be a boy). Pregnancy and conception are fortunately not a problem; my question is whether you, as a pioneer in this medical field, can tell us whether the method of Dr. Shettles actually increases the probability of a particular sex, or what we can do to increase the probability of a boy? Many heartfelt thanks in advance and best regards!

Christian on 24.03.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

There is now a preparation (a dietary supplement) that specifically aims to make the secretion in the cervix more permeable to either female or male sperm. This is intended to favour either male or female sperm. Of course, optimising the timing of intercourse can also be an advantage, as male sperm are generally more motile but do not survive as long as female sperm. However, there is no one hundred percent guarantee. The selection of embryos by means of IVF treatment and genetic testing is prohibited in Austria and therefore only possible abroad.

Dear team, we have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years. I was diagnosed with delayed patency in both fallopian tubes. I have now been advised to have IVF. Can the IVF Fund also be used in the case of delayed fallopian tubes?

Carina on 10.03.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, if the fallopian tubes are not functioning, you are entitled to it. Please come to us for a consultation!

Dear Professor Feichtinger! I would like to know whether there is a solution if my husband has no sperm but does have testicles.

Dagmar on 02.03.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, in that case sperm can be retrieved directly from the testicle by means of a so-called testicular puncture (TESE) and used to fertilize your egg cells. To find out whether and exactly how this is possible, a few more test results are needed. Please come and see us for a consultation!

I have been undergoing fertility treatment at another clinic since January 2020. I am 35, my partner is 31. We both have issues: he has a restricted semen analysis, and I suffer from endometriosis. After 2 years of trying naturally, nothing happened. After the second ICSI we underwent numerous examinations. Immunological workup, 3rd laparoscopy (endometriosis grade 1 removed, everything patent and unremarkable), NK cells significantly elevated, plasma cells fine, we did not have a karyogram done. We have already had 3 ICSIs; the third ICSI included SMOFlipid. My question now is whether a consultation with you could open up new options for us, or whether everything has in fact already been medically exhausted. What does an initial consultation cost at your clinic? Stimulation was done once with Puregon 200 and then with Meriofert, once 150 and once 210. Unfortunately, despite 10 retrieved egg cells, of which 7 were always fertilized, we have never managed to have egg cells frozen. I am simply at a bit of a loss now, because only 1 more attempt will be subsidized. I would be grateful for your answer.

Franziska on 01.03.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, please come in for a consultation; it will be better to answer your many questions in person.

Good day! What is your opinion on taking DHEA to improve egg cell quality? Thank you very much!

Valeria on 26.02.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

It is recommended for older patients with declining ovarian reserve (elevated FSH and low AMH). The scientific evidence for improved ovarian function is, however, thin. But since DHEA is harmless, has few side effects and tends to have a beneficial effect as an anti-aging hormone (it is a hormone precursor for all ovarian hormones), you are certainly welcome to give it a try.

I am in a lesbian relationship. We have found our own chosen sperm donor (a good friend). His semen analysis turned out to be very good, but unfortunately his sperm did not survive the thawing test (fertility clinic). So my question is: is it possible at your institute to carry out an insemination with fresh sperm? Thank you very much for your reply!

Katja on 25.02.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, of course, provided the donor is on site and available at the time of egg retrieval. You can register with us for an initial consultation, and we can most likely accept you into our program!

Good day, my husband suffers from azoospermia. We already had an ICSI with donor sperm in Spain, but unfortunately it did not work. We would like information on how the process works at your clinic, and a list of the costs.

Leonie on 23.02.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

You can find more information about our ICSI treatment here. Feel free to book a free place at our next fertility information evening for your individual questions!

Dear Sir or Madam! After 3 attempts and one miscarriage (5 weeks), we had a genetic examination (unremarkable) and an immune status done. The immune status shows: immunoglobulins and IgG subclasses not reduced. MBL normal, no indication of a selective antibody production disorder. Thyroglobulin antibodies and anti-TPO positive, as in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. ANF 1:160 positive. Found in an elevated percentage of women with recurrent miscarriages. Now the chances are very low. Is there a possibility for me to become pregnant and without a miscarriage? A therapy, medication or injection? Do I need further examinations? What can we do now? Thank you very much!

Kristin on 19.02.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, please have further examinations done and your thyroid values continuously adjusted by a specialist, usually with thyroxine and selenium. In this regard we cooperate with Doz. Dr. Georg Zettinig: Schilddrüsenpraxis Josefstadt, Laudongasse 12, 1080 Vienna.

Good day! My renewed desire to have a child (I have already conceived spontaneously 3 times) has existed for quite a long time, and for over 2 years we have unfortunately been trying in vain. So far nothing has been diagnosed in my case, since everything apparently seems to be "perfect". My partner turns 51 this year — if his semen analysis result is poor, is there a chance that the IVF Fund will still cover 70% despite his age, or are the rules completely strict, meaning we would have to choose "the expensive option" of paying ourselves?

Sandra on 31.01.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Unfortunately, the rules of the Fund are absolutely strict; even with still-good semen analysis values, at 51 there is no longer any chance of state support.

I became pregnant last spring after just 3 months, but unfortunately I had a miscarriage in the summer. I then needed 2 months to process it. Now we have been trying again for three months to become pregnant (unfortunately without success so far), but I turned 40 two months ago and am therefore somewhat worried. Should I keep trying, or already go to a fertility clinic? Is it possible (since the quality of my egg cells is probably no longer so good) to rule out such "not so good egg cells" — which make miscarriage more likely — by means of IVF? And is it possible to rule out chromosomal abnormalities (such as trisomy 13) with IVF? Thank you very much!

Katja on 19.01.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

In your place, I would indeed turn to a clinic for further evaluation: firstly, important tests should be done, for example a genetic examination from the blood for both you and your husband, and secondly, within the framework of an IVF it is possible to examine your egg cells for the normal distribution of chromosomes using so-called polar body diagnosis and to transfer only those that appear "normal". All of these examinations are carried out at our institute. It would be best to arrange a consultation appointment with Prof. Hengstschläger at our institute. He can then inform you about everything in detail.

Dear Sir or Madam! We have been trying to have a child for 4 years; last year we were at another clinic with 3 attempts without success. On the 1st attempt almost all the egg cells were empty (probably because of the medication, according to the doctor). On the 2nd attempt I received different medication. (5 embryos)

Tamara on 11.01.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

At our institute we follow a virtually standardized procedure after two or three failed attempts:

1.) If irregularities or undetected infections in the uterus are suspected: hysteroscopy with biopsy and histological and bacteriological findings. An even more precise examination is also available here: the determination of the so-called microbiome in the uterus (these are genetic bacterial fragments). Any growths can be removed hysteroscopically.

2.) A genetic examination of both partners (karyogram or karyotype) from the blood.

3.) An immunological examination from the blood

4.) In certain cases, a coagulation-genetic examination from the blood.

Your hormones play only a minor role — at least in a cryotransfer; this embryo transfer can also take place at any other institute. In the event of a new attempt, we also offer so-called preimplantation genetic diagnosis, as permitted by law.

Good day! My partner is unable to father a child (azoospermia). We now want to use his brother's sperm and would like to know whether, in an assisted reproduction treatment using the brother's sperm donation, everything proceeds exactly as it would with an anonymous sperm donation? How many semen analyses should the brother expect (the 1st semen analysis is excellent), and what timeframe should we allow for before we can start with the assisted reproduction? Does the sperm need to be genetically analyzed, or are 2 good semen analyses sufficient? Thank you very much indeed!

Gerlinde on 11.01.2021:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, your brother-in-law would be examined in exactly the same way as an anonymous donor; we refer to him as a "brought-along donor".

His examination includes:
• An initial consultation based on the enclosed completed questionnaires. Once the former has been signed, it also serves as the donor contract.
• A urine test for chlamydia and a blood test for infectious agents (serology) and chromosome analysis, as well as storage of a retention sample.
• Provision of a semen sample for deep-freezing (cryopreservation) of the sperm.

If all findings are in order, he receives medical clearance from us as a donor, and his semen samples receive clearance from the head of the laboratory. From then on, the treatments can be carried out. The entire examination can be performed on a Monday or a Tuesday, in each case after consultation with me. It costs 600 euros.

I read on the Wunschbaby website that you should not get vaccinated against Covid if you want to become pregnant soon. Since I work in a hospital setting, I have the opportunity to get vaccinated relatively soon. Is there any general information on whether the vaccination affects fertility? My partner and I have not yet decided whether we want children; at the earliest it would be planned in 2 years, and I have now been somewhat unsettled by colleagues.

Susanne on 23.12.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

There is currently no evidence that the vaccination affects fertility in either men or women. If you are only planning to have children in about 2 years, I would have no concerns about the vaccination.

Good day! Is there a BMI value at your institute above which, in the absence of other underlying conditions (DM, etc.), no IUIs or IVFs are performed?

Anton on 13.11.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

As long as it is technically feasible and there is nothing that speaks against a pregnancy (further weight gain!), both an IVF attempt and an insemination are possible. (By "technical feasibility" I mean that a vaginal ultrasound is possible and the cervix can be visualized through the vagina with the appropriate gynecological instruments.)

Dear Sir or Madam, my partner is planning to undergo a vasectomy soon (the date has not yet been set). Although we are sure that we do not want children, we are considering having sperm frozen. Should we, contrary to expectations, develop a desire to have children, we could still fall back on it. Would this be possible at your clinic?

Irene on 11.11.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, that is possible. Please contact Mr. Reinhalter on 01 8777775 38.

I have wanted a child since 2013, and thanks to assisted reproduction I already have twins. Over time I have had fewer egg cells, and I was told that I am in menopause. Is there still a way to become pregnant through assisted reproduction? Thank you very much!

Theresa on 28.10.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Everything depends on your hormone values. The hormone AMH, for example, indicates the ovarian reserve, while the hormone FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) reflects the current situation at the start of the cycle and whether hormonal stimulation of the ovaries makes sense. Without these values, no prognosis can be made. Taking your age into account (how old are you?), one could possibly also consider "ovarian rejuvenation" by means of an injection of platelet-rich plasma.

Good day! I have a very personal question for you! I am 46, my new partner is 40, and we still wish to have a child! Do you consider that still realistic? I already have a daughter, aged 13. We had one IVF, which unfortunately did not succeed. Is there still a chance for us? Please give me your honest answer!

Gabriele on 28.10.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

The chances at 46 are very low, but there have also been successful cases.

I have a question: 11 years ago I was vaccinated with the cervical cancer vaccine, and my biggest worry now is that I can no longer become pregnant — now that I have the right partner by my side and the time has come, at 29, to have a baby with my partner. I stopped taking the pill in May, and 5 months have already passed. I know it can take a year, but only now am I starting to wonder whether I can become pregnant at all because of those three injections. I have such a great desire to have children, but I always had the wrong partner, and that is why I thought carefully about whether I should postpone it, because he simply was not a man mature enough to take on the role of a father. Only now am I realizing that I do not know whether I can still become pregnant at all because of these injections. Thank you in advance for a reply!

Denise on 16.10.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Dear Ms. D., I can completely reassure you on this point: the HPV vaccination (vaccination against HPV viruses and cervical cancer) has absolutely no influence whatsoever on later fertility. In your place, I would rather have a general fertility workup done, with a semen analysis for him and a hormone status for you, etc.

Good day! I am turning to you because I am already quite desperate. I have been trying to become pregnant for over 3 years, without success. I already had IVF in April and May 2020; the first was unsuccessful, the second turned out to be a mysterious abdominal (ectopic) pregnancy? I was operated on twice and then had a miscarriage. It has now been 3 months; during the laparoscopy, endometriosis was removed, I have no cysts, and my fallopian tubes are unremarkable. I do not know what to do next; my cycle is crazy — I am currently on cycle day 51. I used to take the pill for about 10 years; after stopping it (4 years ago) I had a very irregular cycle, and nothing has helped to get it under control. So I no longer do ovulation tests either, since I never know how long the current cycle will be. Despite everything, my wish would be to become pregnant naturally, without IVF. But should there be no other way, is it possible to have the already frozen embryos transported from my old clinic to you? Thank you in advance for your answer, with kind regards

Karolina on 13.10.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

If your period fails to occur, or with such long intervals, I would, in your place, have a hormone status done, with LH, FSH, prolactin, estradiol, progesterone, AMH and hCG. Then you are welcome to come to us for further consultation. Yes, it is also possible to have the already frozen embryos brought to us. Please ask Mr. Reinhalter on 01 8777775; he coordinates such transports and will tell you exactly how to proceed.

Good day. We already had our first child through IVF, and now we want to try again to have a child with IVF, but I am still breastfeeding. Is it also possible without weaning? Thank you

Alexandra on 10.09.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

No, please don't. The milk hormone prolactin interferes with ovulation and follicle maturation.

I wanted to ask whether it is possible at your clinic to have an IVF with donated embryos? We are from Croatia.

Josip on 07.10.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Do you want to donate embryos, or have an embryo transfer with donated embryos? Please clarify, but I believe that in either case we would face legal problems here.

Dear Prof. Dr. Feichtinger, my wife and I would like to have a child and are therefore already in contact with the University Hospital Innsbruck. We would now like to know how high the costs for the donor sperm are and which clinic you work with, so that we can have a look there to find the right donor. Thank you very much for your efforts.

Bianca on 24.09.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

We maintain an in-house donor bank and cooperate with two further banks based within the EU. The costs vary depending on the choice of bank. May I ask you to contact our office directly; they will be happy to inform you about the options and the associated costs.

Good day! I am now 42 and wish to have a child with my current husband. I have had this wish for 10 years, but unfortunately my husband has had a vasectomy (which was unfortunately carried out during his previous marriage!). Am I now too old? I still have my monthly periods and do not smoke. Do I have a chance?

Petra on 22.09.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, certainly. For your husband, a hormonal workup is required to determine whether sperm are still being produced; if so, then a testicular puncture with IVF for you — that is feasible. However, the success rate is already beginning to decline at your age. The chances can be determined most accurately on the basis of a hormone status and a genetic examination. All of this can be done at our institute!

Hello, at 34 my FSH is repeatedly elevated at the beginning of my cycle (up to 17). Strange, but since my mother was already in menopause at 42, it is actually not that unlikely. My question: if the FSH is NOT checked before a stimulation, does the stimulation and the subsequent ovulation trigger make any sense, should the FSH have been elevated? My AMH is also only between 0.6 and 1.2. Somehow I think everyone just wants to avoid worrying me. But I see no point in continuing to spend money on this if my elevated FSH is not taken seriously and accordingly not monitored :( I arrange the sporadic monitoring of my FSH myself through my general practitioner again and again. I thank you in advance and remain with kind regards!

Kathrin on 20.09.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

The basic rule is: an FSH value should be checked before every stimulation at the beginning of the cycle. It provides the prognosis for the chances of stimulation in the current cycle. A value up to 12 is considered normal; up to 15: a stimulation is feasible; 15-20: a stimulation can be attempted; above 20: very poor chances.

I live in Wr. Neustadt and am currently undergoing a second IVF treatment. I suffer from PCOS. At the egg retrieval, 28 egg cells were obtained and 3 blastocysts developed. All 3 were frozen for a cryotransfer. After a few months, the first blastocyst, of A quality, was transferred; after 12 days my beta-hCG was 0. In the next cycle, the remaining 2 blastocysts, of good quality according to our doctor, were transferred. Today, 8 days after the transfer, knowing full well that it is much too early, I did a pregnancy test with a sensitivity of 10 mIU, and it came back negative. Now I am worried that I have again failed to achieve implantation. Shouldn't this test show at least a very faint line? Day-5 blastocysts at 8 days after the transfer? I kindly ask for your opinion. Thank you very much in advance.

Sophie on 06.09.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

It is best to have a blood test (beta-hCG) done; then you will know for certain. Urine tests, even the best ones, are not always reliable. Should it indeed not have worked again, I recommend, before a further attempt, a few examinations into the reasons for implantation failure, which you are welcome to have done at our institute.

Dear Dr. Feichtinger, I had 2 semen analyses done 6 months apart. In both, no mature sperm or immature forms could be detected. Is there any form of hope of having children naturally?

Herbert on 03.09.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

You should definitely have a hormone status done (blood sample for the hormones FSH, LH, PRL, TSH) (this can also be done at our institute, billed via your health insurance). There are in fact certain hormonal situations in which a man, just like a woman, can be stimulated with "fertility drugs" so that sperm maturation is "kick-started" again.

My husband and I would like to know up to which month of pregnancy you can still fly without problems. We would like to get married in Jamaica while pregnant, without it being a risk.

Viktoria on 01.09.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

That depends very much on the timing, on a normal course of the pregnancy, and also on the airline. Every airline has its own regulations in this regard; some require a medical certificate. So please enquire there.

I am turning 45 this week, my husband is 44. We have a 16-year-old son, and it is not working a second time. Unfortunately, we have now waited too long. What is still legally possible?

Martina on 27.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

As long as you are not yet in menopause and have hormone values that indicate regular and good ovulation, we are also permitted to treat you with medically assisted reproduction. However, the success rate at your age is quite low. Egg donation would offer better prospects, but in Austria it is legally permitted only up to your 45th birthday. If no examinations have been done yet: in addition to the hormone status, a thorough semen analysis would be absolutely essential.

I have had 4 negative transfers at 2 different clinics. My last examination was with ERA, EMMA and ALICE, the test from Igenomix, and Chipsi — all without success. The problem is my husband's sperm. We are looking for an institute that performs Fertile Chip and MACS. Do you have these options at your clinic? Also the Embrace test or PGT-A? Also a thrombosis test? Thank you very much for your attention.

Sandra on 25.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

We do all of these, except MACS.

What is the advantage of blastocyst culture? What happens to the embryos that do not develop into a blastocyst?

Franz on 23.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

To determine the vitality and developmental progress of embryos. Only dying embryos and those of very poor quality fail to reach the blastocyst stage by day 5.

We were at another fertility clinic last year; despite high hopes, 5 blastocysts and a completely healthy body, it still did not work. I should add that I already have 3 healthy children conceived naturally and that, unfortunately, I had myself sterilized after the 3rd child. Even my gynecologist was so convinced that it would work right away. Unfortunately in vain: out of a total of 4 attempts, one fresh attempt — the test was frozen — twice one blastocyst each, and the last time 2 blastocysts. We qualified for the Fund because of my husband's semen analysis. Is there a possibility of qualifying for the Fund again?

Nina on 21.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

If you have already completed 4 attempts through the Fund, then there is no chance for you of further cost coverage by the Fund.

Is it also possible to bring the ejaculate along to your clinic?

Wilhelm on 19.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes!

I wanted to ask how long embryos are cultured at your clinic at most. I have read that recent studies show that culturing until day 7 can be very worthwhile. What is your opinion on this? Thank you very much!

Therese on 13.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

We culture until day 6 at most. Day 7 is problematic insofar as good development of the blastocyst by then already depends on nutrients and other substances that are not present in the culture medium, but are present in the uterus.

Does it make sense to transfer an 8-cell embryo on day 5? Thank you very much for your efforts!

Stefan on 12.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Not really, because an "8-cell embryo" on day 5 would already be lagging behind in its development. But in medicine there are occasionally quite unusual cases...

Dear Dr. Feichtinger, unfortunately my first pregnancy ended in the 8th week (missed abortion) with a curettage in April 2019. Since then we have been trying to get pregnant again. I have already had one insemination, as well as Puregon, Estrofem and Duphaston treatments. In July I had a hysteroscopy during which mild adhesions were removed. Unfortunately, my endometrium (still) does not build up thick enough. (usually around 5.5-6mm at ovulation) The semen analysis and my hormone values are fine. I am 37 years old. I have already been treated at a fertility centre, but the doctors there said that not much can be done if the endometrium refuses to build up. Now I have read on your website that there is a new platelet therapy. Do you see any chances for me? We would truly try everything. Thank you very much!

Karolin on 11.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, here is the direct link to our scientific report: https://www.wunschbaby.at/expertenblog/l/neuer-behandlungsansatz-bei-wiederholtem-ivf-implantationsversagen-und-duenner-gebaermutterschleimha.html

I am 42 years old and live in Hungary, but I work in Austria. I naturally have health insurance; my partner works in Hungary, so he has no insurance in Austria. Is it possible for us to have treatment at your institute? If so, how much does it cost? Thank you!

Sigried on 11.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

You are not entitled to health insurance coverage in Austria, because here the support ends at the 40th birthday. A private cycle costs between €4000 and €5000, depending on whether you bring the medication with you from Hungary, whether necessary examinations have to be carried out at our institute, and which additional treatments are to be performed. For more detailed information, I would ask you to visit us in person. (with any existing test results and medical reports)

My wife turns 50 this month. We would need egg donation and ICSI. From what I have read, she is too old for this under the laws in your country?

Franz on 09.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, that is correct; please contact clinics in neighbouring countries.

In my last attempts to have a child, I had a miscarriage every single time and am understandably desperate. Can you help me?

Carmen on 05.08.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

This question is very complex and can only be answered in a personal context. Of course, we can arrange the appropriate examinations and then usually provide targeted treatment.

Good day! I have mild PCOS and would like to have a child. We have only been trying to get pregnant for a few months. Personally, I could not imagine having artificial insemination or anything similar. Are there other options apart from, for example, inositol? Or how long would you wait? Is it even realistic to get pregnant naturally with PCOS? My period comes every 35 to 40 days…

Kristin on 27.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Of course you can also get pregnant naturally with PCOS. Since you do have a cycle, ovulation must also take place approximately 12-14 days before your period. As in your case this can only ever be determined retrospectively, I would suggest so-called cycle monitoring. This consists of ultrasound examinations, starting around cycle day 14. This allows ovulation to be predicted at short notice. You can then have "intercourse at the optimum time (VZO)" with your partner at the indicated time - without having to come back to the institute. Ovulation can also be supported with medication, but again, please only under regular ultrasound monitoring. Before prescribing any medication, however, one should be quite sure that your fallopian tubes are fully open and that your partner's semen analysis is completely normal.

Dear Dr. Feichtinger, unfortunately I have just been through my 4th miscarriage. However, I already have a healthy daughter and had no problems during my 1st pregnancy. All the tests have now been done: coagulation, genetics, thyroid, etc. — nothing was found. I then suspected that I probably had a septum, because after the birth of my daughter, tissue fragments or remnants of the placenta remained in the uterus and everything became inflamed, which gave me a fever, etc. A septum was indeed found and removed. After its removal, I got pregnant right away after 2 cycles. But then I again had a miscarriage in the 8th week. This time the baby had not developed. In the other miscarriages I always had bleeding until it passed on its own. Of all 4 miscarriages, a heartbeat was only seen in the 3rd, and the development was also on track. But then suddenly heavy bleeding set in and everything was gone, because I always had a haematoma. Now I have been advised to have another hormone profile done and to start progesterone injections in the event of a new pregnancy. Is there still hope, and what do you advise here? Many thanks and kind regards

Eldijana on 26.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Unfortunately, you have apparently already been through a great deal on your journey to have a child. Your question is therefore very complex. I would prefer to discuss this with you in person. Even though a lot has already happened and been investigated, several questions remain open for me.

How common are twins after fertility treatment?

Stefan on 24.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

In the past there were more twin pregnancies after IVF-ET because 2 or even more embryos were frequently transferred. In recent years this practice has been abandoned, and a so-called "single embryo transfer (SET)" is usually performed. According to the statistics of the IVF Fund, the twin rate is currently around 10% of all pregnancies. Very rarely, identical twins also occur after SET; this is unpredictable.

We already have two children through artificial insemination. Does the Fund also pay for a third child through artificial insemination?

Christoph on 21.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, up to the woman's 40th birthday and the partner's 50th.

Does the initial consultation at your institute always cost €150, or only if you do not subsequently come to you for treatment?

Sabrina on 20.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, every initial consultation costs €150.

I am 27 years old and have now had my 4th miscarriage. After the 2nd miscarriage, my daughter was born. I was diagnosed with a tendency to thrombosis due to elevated lipoprotein A; despite treatment, I have had another miscarriage. What can I do?

Nina on 16.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Miscarriages can have many causes, even though a treatable cause has already been identified in your case. We would additionally suggest a karyogram examination for both partners and a 3-D ultrasound to check whether there are any causes within the uterus as well. These can include, for example: small endometrial polyps, fibroids or other small growths, which can then usually be treated with the help of a hysteroscopy.

We come from Germany - can we undergo treatment at your institute?

Peter on 07.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, of course we also treat couples from Germany!

Do you also offer online consultations? If so, what do I need for this?

Christin on 06.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Gladly by telephone. Please call the institute's number and arrange a time for us to call you back. If you would like to speak to me personally, Wednesday is always the best day (I am on holiday until 20.7.2020).

Hello, I am single, 37 years old, healthy and would like to have a baby. Is it possible for me to have artificial insemination? Thank you very much for your reply.

Isabell on 02.07.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

In Austria we are not permitted to treat single women. However, we would be happy to assess your chances of pregnancy in an informational consultation and advise you on what you could do.

My number of follicles is very low, so IVF has only been possible once so far. Now I have read about 3 procedures that are said to lead to ovarian rejuvenation: ovarian fragmentation for follicle activation and bone marrow-derived stem cells, and very frequently about platelet-rich plasma. Do these procedures have different chances of success?

Nicole on 24.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

I am not familiar with the first two procedures, because they have apparently not become established. (probably because they are too invasive) We perform the injection of platelet-rich plasma at our institute quite often. However, this procedure only has good chances of success if ovarian function has not ceased due to age, but rather in younger women with so-called POF. (Premature Ovarian Failure)

I have been considering becoming a sperm donor for some time, but I would like to look into it more closely and find out about the requirements and legal obligations.

Armin on 21.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Please register for a non-binding, free informational consultation at our institute with Doz. Dr. Kemeter or OA Dr. Sinkorova.

Good day, up to what age of the woman do you perform IVF with her own egg cells (with PGD)?

Kathrin on 19.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Up to natural menopause.

I am planning a vasectomy and am interested in cryopreservation of my sperm. Is there any information available regarding the price and procedure?

Stephan on 16.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Please make an appointment for the sperm sample, ideally after 3-4 days of sexual abstinence. The semen analysis will be discussed before cryopreservation with regard to quality and the chances of successful freezing. We also need a blood and urine sample. The following costs therefore apply: €600 for freezing and 1 year of storage, plus €80 for the blood test and €50 for testing the sperm for germs. Each additional year of storage costs €300.

We have already been through several ICSI attempts and are now considering whether we (both nearly 43) should try again. Do you think we still have a chance of having a baby?

Christian on 15.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

We repeatedly have successes even at your age. Everything naturally depends on the current state of your ovarian function, and this can easily be checked with a hormone profile - a blood test on cycle day 2-4 for the hormones FSH, LH, E2, PRL, TSH and AMH. Ideally, please come to an initial consultation with these (recently obtained!) results, a current semen analysis and all documentation from your previous attempts.

Could you please tell me the costs and the procedure for the fertifate ovo reserve test that you offer?

Marion on 10.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

For the test, a blood sample is taken at any point in the cycle. You also do not need to fast. The evaluation of this very complex genetic test costs €950.

I will turn 46 in November. Is egg donation still possible in Vienna?

Anna on 08.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

I am sorry, but in Austria the 45th birthday is the upper limit for the transfer of a donated egg cell.

Is it possible to have a monitored hormone treatment at your institute and then carry out in vitro fertilisation. (In order to have twins). Can the sex be determined? (I heard that this is only possible in the USA).

Herbert on 03.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

In Austria, sex selection is only possible to rule out severe sex-linked hereditary diseases. However, there are also European countries where sex selection is handled more liberally. In any case, a monitored hormone treatment with subsequent in vitro fertilisation can be carried out at our institute. Deliberately aiming for a twin pregnancy is not explicitly forbidden as such, but there are binding guidelines stating that, as a rule, only one fertilised egg cell should be transferred. (except after repeatedly failed attempts and in cases of advanced patient age)

Dear Sir or Madam, I would like to know whether you are also permitted to treat single women from abroad and what age limit applies in Austria?

Doris on 01.06.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

We are not permitted to treat single women in Austria, regardless of their origin.

I already have 2 children. My youngest son has just turned 2 years old. However, I would like to have a vasectomy, but first I would like to have my sperm frozen. What is the best way to do this?

Christoph on 25.05.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, that is entirely possible. Please simply contact us. Freezing is subject to a charge, but it is affordable. There is a freezing fee and a storage fee per year, with a legal storage period of up to 10 years. The first year is included in the freezing fee. Before providing the sperm sample, 3-4 days of sexual abstinence are recommended.

We have been through 4 unsuccessful attempts at another centre and have no embryos left. We would now like to try a different centre. Would something like this be possible, and how does it work in this case?

Erwin on 23.05.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, of course, a change can always bring success, because other doctors and biologists may have different, better ideas. Please register for an initial consultation with us and bring all your documents; most test results remain valid for up to 3 months, some even longer. We can also clarify whether you are still entitled to Fund support.

I am considering starting hormone therapy as part of treatment for transsexuality. My research has shown that this reduces fertility or even destroys it completely. Is that correct? Can I have sperm cells cryopreserved before starting the therapy?

Maria on 15.05.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, that is entirely possible. Please register with us for this. Freezing and storage involve minor costs.

We would like to have a child; I stopped taking the pill six months ago, but I have not yet ovulated and have a very short cycle (19 days). What should we do?

Heike on 14.05.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

This problem can be resolved quite easily! Please come in on cycle day 2 or 3 for a hormone test (blood sample from a vein) and, after your period, for a consultation with an ultrasound examination. However, we would also need to know whether everything is fine with your partner. So: a semen analysis in advance would be an advantage.

Dear Prof. Feichtinger, I would like to know whether the Fund also supports same-sex couples?

Silvia on 13.05.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Yes, the IVF Fund also supports same-sex couples, provided that an indication is present (damaged fallopian tubes, the presence of endometriosis, egg maturation disorders, etc.) and that the age limit is met (the recipient woman up to 40, her life partner up to 50). However, if everything is medically fine with the recipient, then a donor sperm insemination via the vagina is sufficient.

I will soon be 39, have no children and no urgent desire to have a child, and am therefore interested in cryopreservation. Can you give me some information?

Birgit on 12.05.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

First, your ovarian reserve would need to be examined. This can be done quite simply with a blood sample from the crook of your arm for the purpose of determining a hormone profile with FSH, LH, oestradiol, TSH, prolactin and AMH. This test should ideally be carried out on cycle day 2 or 3. Please make an appointment with us for this, and right away also a consultation appointment with me or one of the doctors at our institute for one of the days after the test. If you already have such a hormone profile (no older than 3 months), you can also make an appointment for a consultation straight away.

Since my boyfriend and I would like to have a child and I know that I have PCOS, I would like to know whether we can undergo fertility treatment at your institute?

Sandra on 09.05.2020:

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

PCOS is one of the classic and relatively common reasons for treatment, even with state support through health insurance, provided you and your boyfriend are covered by health insurance in Austria. Please make a consultation appointment with us, ideally for both of you together.

I am interested in social freezing. I am 35 years old and would like to freeze egg cells in the coming months. What is the procedure?

Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Feichtinger answered this question.

Please make an appointment with us, ideally at the beginning of a cycle. There we can explain the entire procedure to you in detail and carry out a hormone profile to determine your ovarian reserve. However, in Austria a medical indication is required for the freezing of egg cells, so as mentioned, I would encourage you to arrange an appointment so that we can determine whether we are permitted to freeze your egg cells in accordance with legal requirements.
